Grid Modernization Planning Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY

The Grid Modernization Planning Engineer position will be responsible for analyzing long and short term plans with an emphasis on the facilitation of energy efficiency, electrification, power quality, and technical engineering solutions supporting distribution cooperatives and Distributed Energy Resources. The role will strive to improve retention, expansion, and satisfaction of non-residential customers as well as support system plans and studies to ensure Hoosier Energy compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies and best practices. This will be achieved through collaboration with neighboring utilities, MISO, and reliability organizations. Each of these objectives will drive at effective and reliable operation of the evolving grid for Hoosier’s member owners.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Relationship Assistance/Management
    • Technical engineering solutions in collaboration with Engineering Services and Member Relations Specialist
    • Collaborative engagement as a cross functional technical subject matter expert
  • Technical expertise
    • Provides consultation and recommendations to distributed generation planning process
    • Assist in performing initial engineering reviewal tasks and projects associated with inquiries into Hoosier Energy’s small generator interconnection request policy.
    • Serves as an additional technical expert in distributed energy resource potential and inquiries
    • Coordinates facility planning with regional transmission organizations. Provides regional reliability organizations (MISO) with required reliability information on existing and future facilities. Provides power flow studies, facilities ratings, contingency plans and other related reliability analysis as required by regulatory agencies.
    • Power Factor, Load Factor, Power Quality, Reliability, resiliency opportunities and best practices
    • Corporate sustainability
      • ESG goals, Renewable resources, Beneficial electrification, Electric Vehicles (EV), etc.
    • Performs electrical power system studies in the areas of power flow, stability and related topics utilizing transmission planning software (e.g. PSSE, PowerWorld). Facilitates planning of system additions, modifications and improvements with interconnected utilities.
  • Demand Side Management
    • Understand/Communicate/Educate
    • Energy Efficiency, Audit guidance
    • Facilitate communications between Cooperative and Hoosier Energy
  • Duties/responsibilities as assigned by Manager of System Planning
    • As assigned – including but not limited to: member cooperative education, Business retention and expansion opportunities, Seminars and Education
JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent
Experience:
  • Two years’ minimum as associate engineer, senior engineer and/or project engineer, or key accounts manager for an electric power utility, consulting firm or similar experience with power engineering services
Skills and Abilities:
  • Broad knowledge of program implementation and evaluation
  • Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels and work as part of a team
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Demonstrated level of professionalism, positive attitude and ability to motivate others
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills to identify, anticipate and resolve problems
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mathematics and statistics, statistical analysis and forecasting
  • Experience with PSSE, PowerWorld Simulator, or other power flow and stability modeling software
Working Conditions
  • Usual office conditions apply to this position
  • Occasional travel to member systems and large C&I accounts
  • Occasional overnight travel associated with meetings and conferences
  • Extended hours may be required to achieve program objectives
