Description
Responsible for the overall management of the 12th Street Community Center and plans and oversees all other recreation programing and events for the Parks and Recreation Department. Primary focus of duties consists of the organization, coordination, and supervision of the community recreation programs for seniors, adults, and/or youth, including cultural arts, physical activities, special interest classes and/or events throughout the year. Responsible for the hiring of the Recreation Center staff, various activity instructors, coaches, and umpires.
Examples of Duties
- Provide overall management and supervision of assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources; plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments; trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed.
- Provides leadership and direction in the development of short and long range plans; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports and recommendations; coordinates department activities with other departments and agencies as needed.
- Develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public;
- Communicate effectively, orally and in writing; plan and supervise the work of paid staff and volunteers.
- Assures that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget; performs cost control activities; monitors revenues and expenditures in assigned area to assure sound fiscal control; prepares annual budget requests; assures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities, and time.
- Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
- Prepares a variety of studies, reports and related information for decision-making purposes.
- Oversee and conduct the coordination of schedules for recreation staff in the development and implementation of community recreation programs.
- Ensure accurate time-keeping management for payroll.
- Responsible for the overall coordination of sports programs, registration, collection of fees, and acquisition of contractors needed to support recreational programs.
- Conducts supervision of classes, workshops and activities for persons engaged in recreation programs and co-sponsored programs.
- Selects, plans, and implements cultural arts, physical activities, and special interest activities.
- Responds to public inquiries about recreation programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings.
- Develop marketing material for publication i.e. a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, fliers, and related communications regarding recreation programs.
- Promotes interest and provides information regarding recreation programs to school officials, other recreation officials, community service groups, other City departments, and the general public.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education/Knowledge/Skills:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in Recreation or a closely related field.
- Minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible experience in recreation programs including community center programming; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- First Aid and CPR or the ability to attain one within 90 days upon hire.
- Must occasionally lift and or move up to 40 lbs.*
- Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must be able to speak and understand the English language.*
- Must be able to reach for and use required tools, objects, or equipment*

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office in morning and early afternoon, or moderately loud in the afternoon and evenings.
