This position's work location is fully remote with the ocassional time onsite as needed. The selected candidate may only work remotely from a New England state (ME, VT, NH, MA, CT, RI). Reporting to an Assistant Director of Licensing, the Licensing Manager will be a member of the Belfer Office for Dana-Farber Innovations (BODFI) at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). The Licensing Manager will work independently on IP matters and related agreement transactions and, will work collaboratively with DFCI faculty and researchers, to negotiate and manage a large number of partnership and commercialization activities such as sponsored research and licensing of intellectual property (IP) agreements. The Licensing Manager is expected to work independently, with limited guidance from their manager on more complex matters. Evaluation of a deal sheet is required as an application document to evaluate candidate experience and assess competency in technology transfer transactions. BODFI is responsible for business development and technology transfer activities at DFCI with a focus on identifying new discoveries from the DFCI research community and generating alliances to move science from bench to clinic for maximum impact. Intellectual Property In collaboration with the Office of General Counsel, oversees a large portfolio of IP assets. Integrates legal and business strategy to manage IP portfolio effectively. Agreements/Transactions In collaboration with the BODFI Contracts team or independently, negotiates confidentiality agreements, material transfer agreements, data use agreements, collaboration agreements and inter-institutional agreements. Independently negotiates sponsored research agreements with industry partners, foundations and other institutions and works collaboratively with faculty and staff at DFCI to ensure compliant execution of these agreements throughout their duration at DFCI; for more complex agreements may require limited input from manager. Develops term sheets and negotiates new IP licensing and option agreements with limited input from manager. Manages existing licensing agreements and relationships with licensees. May manage existing and new partnerships or alliances by helping track project deliverables and overall progress, new IP generation, and communicating with stakeholders on various aspects of the alliance, including rights and obligations of parties involved. Business Development Maintains an active portfolio of industry contacts and collaborates with other colleagues at BODFI to establish business development strategy. Participates in the development of marketing material for DFCI technologies and presents to internal and external stakeholders and interested parties. PI Relationship Management/Communication Independently responds to complex inquiries from PIs and other parties. Coordinates and leads meetings with PIs and other stakeholders relating to their IP portfolio, with manager support only on complex issues. Articulates institutional policies and practices to PIs and external parties. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None A Bachelor’s degree in business, law or science is required; an advanced degree, such as a Master’s or PhD is preferred. 3 years of licensing experience is required. Some experience in the commercialization of software, AI/ML models and algorithms, and other digital/copyrightable assets is preferred. Strong business relationships within the life sciences and/or technology industries preferred. Evaluation of a deal sheet will be required to determine candidate experience and assess competency in technology transfer transactions. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Comprehension of science, IP law and business development to manage a large portfolio of technologies. Detail-oriented. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Communicates proactively. Excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrated independence with the ability to identify problems and suggest solutions that are confirmed by manager. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team or work independently. Organized, with ability to concurrently manage a large number of projects, transactions, opportunities and relationships with potentially competing deadlines. Ability to represent DFCI and gain the confidence, trust and respect of clinicians, scientists, administrators, investors, external industry counterparts, corporate executives, and entrepreneurs. Intermediate negotiation skills applicable to all but most complex issues. Ability to work in a highly matrixed and complex organization with multiple stakeholders.
