General Functions:

The Residential Support Staff is a member of a multi-disciplinary care team working to support participants in their recovery journey within a residential treatment setting. Support Staff facilitate skill development, serve as direct milieu support, and promote overall safety in the milieu. Staff utilize trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and recovery-oriented approaches. This role engages in highly interactive and supportive encounters with participants and utilizes interactions with participants to promote strengths and support growth. The Support Staff also assists the program with technical and program needs, organizing and maintaining the facility, and transporting and supervising participants in the community.

Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

Residential Support Staff, I
  • Monitor day-to-day program schedules.
  • Work to promote a therapeutic and supportive milieu culture and environment.
  • Participate in milieu and communicate any issues or concerns within the program.
  • Complete required and assigned documentation by using shift reports and interdepartmental communications.
  • Facilitate verbal de-escalation skills when necessary.
  • Understand and use Trauma-Informed and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques.
  • Provide social and emotional support to participants within the Recovery Services programs.
  • Monitor and control visitor and guest access per Recovery Services protocols and ensure adherence to procedures and program expectations.
  • Support participants and staff to meet and maintain all health and safety standards per CITC's policies and procedures.
  • Monitor participant passes, to ensure adherence to proper procedure and program expectations.
  • Assist in a commercial kitchen environment and supports food service for the participants, when appropriate.
  • Communicate any participant behavioral or emotional presentations to the treatment team.
  • Work closely with staff and participants to follow the program manual, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist with scheduled participant meetings with approved family, tele-psych, and clinicians, to ensure seamless facilitation of groups, one-on-ones, training, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with all employees and team members toward achieving program goals.
  • Transport participants on assigned activities, case management services, and outings as needed.
  • Attend scheduled off-campus activities in support of the approved program goals such as fishing, hiking, skiing, canoeing, berry picking.
  • Monitor participants' self-administration of medication, to ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Document all medical appointments, referrals, and medication transactions in support of all program policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a respectful relationship with participants, former participants, family members, and peers in full accordance with HIPAA and 42CFR part 2 regulations.
  • Promote program rules and expectations for all participants.
  • Model professional, respectful, caring, calm demeanor in all interactions.
  • Maintain, organize, and keep clean assigned areas and surrounding offices.
  • Attend and participate in relevant trainings and meetings within assigned time limits.
  • Complete administrative duties as expected.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned.
Residential Support Staff, II
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities of a Residential Support Staff I with high level of proficiency.
  • Support case management efforts.
  • Coordinate training/in-services for Residential Support Staff.
  • Aid in onboarding/training of new Support Staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned.
Job Responsibilities Related to Participant Privacy
  • Employee is expected to actively participate in CITC privacy training and to protect the privacy of participant information in accordance with CITC's privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal and state law. Failure to comply with CITC's policies and procedures on participant privacy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
  • Employee may access protected health information and other participant information only to the extent necessary to complete job duties. Employee may only share such information on a need-to-know basis with others who have job responsibilities related to treatment, payment, or other CITC operations.
  • Employee is encouraged and expected to report, without the threat of retaliation, any concerns regarding CITC's policies and procedures on participant privacy and any observed practices in violation of the policy to the designated Privacy Officer.
Job Specifications:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; public speaking, knowledge of proper grammar and vocabulary, spelling, and proofreading skills.
  • Must have strong writing skills with attention to detail and accuracy of fact reporting.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Word and Excel in a Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Ability to work with a PC and other standard office equipment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, and ability to make decisions and exercise good judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and prioritize workload.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to coordinate multiple activities.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience conducting individual and group sessions.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to be cross trained in any aspect of the program.

Minimum Qualifications:

Residential Support Staff I
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of professional and supervised social service or related work experience, preferably in a residential behavioral health setting or similar environment; OR a combination of education and experience with major course work and experience in counseling, psychology, social sciences, or related fields.
Residential Support Staff II
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of professional and supervised social service or related work experience, preferably in a residential behavioral health setting or similar environment
Minimum Qualifications for All Levels
  • Alaska Food Handlers Card, or ability to obtain one upon hire.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory state and federal background check.
  • A valid Alaska driver's license and be insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for at least three years.
  • Willingness to submit to test for tuberculosis.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associates degree, college coursework or bachelor's degree in human services, psychology, or related field.
  • Three (3) years of professional and supervised social service or related work experience. working in a residential behavioral health setting or similar environment.
  • Experience working in a milieu and/or residential treatment setting.
  • Training in and experience using Motivational Interviewing techniques.
  • Experience in substance use or mental health treatment services.
  • Experience with EHR (Electronic Health Record) systems.
Physical Requirements:
  • Required to spend extended periods of time at a desk and on a computer.
  • Regularly sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Assist in facilitating year-round recreational and subsistence activities, often outdoors.
  • Assist in a commercial kitchen environment.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
