Job Description

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing/Associate Director of Nursing/Asst. Director of Nursing, the Head Nurse is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and evaluating the quality of care rendered on the Medical Units. As Head Nurse, she/he has the authority and responsibility of managing the unit so as to guarantee quality of care for every patient assigned to the unit and is held accountable by the use of the nursing process. She/he is responsible for the implementation of the Nursing Department Philosophy and Objective of nursing care into management of nursing care on the patients' unit.

Job Responsibilities:
- Receives reports by making rounds with incoming/outgoing staff.
- Coordinates patient care by collaborating with the multidisciplinary team.
- Assesses each patient needs and establishes appropriate plan of care based on Nursing Assessment and Diagnosis.
- Maintains standards of care by ensuring that an individualized plan of care for each patient is developed and implemented.
- Evaluates Nursing Care Plans and the patient's response to that intervention and make modifications as needed.
- Delegates assignments based on staff competence and priority of patient care utilizing the patient classification system and follow-up.
- Supervises and assist the staff in the assessments, documentation, implementation and evaluation of Nursing Care Plan.
- Supervision of professional and unprofessional personnel.
- Makes rounds with Physician and to participate with the team in developing priorities of patient care.
- All other duties as assigned by Supervisor or designee.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
