SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None.

SUMMARY

Provides direct and support services to pregnant and breastfeeding participants including open dialogue, communication, and education. Engages in community outreach by fostering community partnerships.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Abides by, embraces and integrates established Core Values into everyday interactions within the work environment including interaction with co-workers, as well as our WIC participants, as defined within the Employee Standards of Excellence.

Provides outstanding customer service in everyday interactions. Greets participants in a cordial manner.

Receives direction, oversite and best practice coaching from both RD Supervisor and RD Manager-Breastfeeding Services

Cordially greets participants as they enter WIC sites.

Meets with prenatal and breastfeeding participants to encourage and support exclusive breastfeeding practices.

Communicates with participants in person, via telephone, text and/or e-mail to discuss breastfeeding.

Refers participants to lactation specialist for assistance with complex breastfeeding issues.

Documents contact with participants on a daily basis in Peer Counseling Data Base (PCDB) and WIC Web Information System Exchange (WISE), maintaining accurate records.

Assists with providing basic breastfeeding education in group settings using adult learning theories.

Volunteers and engages in outreach activities and media events with the goal of increasing positive awareness of WIC Program and breastfeeding.

Participates actively in local breastfeeding coalition activities that promote and support breastfeeding.

Assists with Breastfeeding Awareness Month events.

Refers participants to health and community services as needed.

Ensures confidentiality of participants, clients, programs, employees, co-workers, the agency and other related information.

Complies with all program, agency, state, and federal policies, procedures, protocols, and regulations.

Actively engages in staff meetings and represents program in a positive professional manner.

Communicates in a professional and effective manner; develops and maintains effective working relationships with clinic staff and others.

Provides updates at staff meetings regarding the breastfeeding peer counseling program and related participant education.

Supports WIC Program Administration by assisting with workgroups, outreach, and other assignments.

Travels on short notice between work locations within program service area, and occasionally travels outside of Fresno County to attend conferences, participate in workshops, and conduct presentations.

Travels for agency business using reliable transportation.

Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.

Works evenings and weekends as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or GED.

College course work in Health Science or related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Six months of experience breastfeeding an infant required.

One year of experience in a WIC Program or other public health program preferred.

Minimum of one year experience using mainframe data entry software preferred.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to provide outstanding customer service in everyday interactions.

Ability to multi-task.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and related business software.

Effective presentation, written and verbal communication skills. Ability to understand and apply written and oral instructions and guidelines.

Bilingual in English/Spanish or other secondary languages may be required based on the needs of the clients and the program.

Willing to work non-traditional hours and days to meet the needs of this position.

Maintain a valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, adequate auto insurance as required by State law, and insurability by agency carrier for those driving agency vehicles.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee will be regularly exposed to bright overhead/commercial lights and/or natural light/sunlight. The employee may be exposed to ceiling fans and the motion of ceiling fans overhead. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, the employee may be exposed to loud noise levels, reaching or exceeding 120 dB(A), if children are present.
