Job Description: Operate sandblasting equipment to prepare surfaces suitable for application of protective coatings and paints to fabricated structural steel material and other painted items. Duties: Performs some or all of the following: Abrades surfaces of metal or hard-composition objects to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt, and to impart specified finish, using abrasive-blasting equipment Shovels or pours abrasives, for example sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hoppers Masks specified areas of object to protect from abrading action Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle Starts equipment that directs blast or flow of abrasive-laden compressed air, gas, or liquid over surface of parts Education: Some college/vocational or technical training, OSHA 10 or 30, High school diploma or GED equivalency preferred. Credentials: Any Industrial Painting Certificate. Type of Abrasive: Sand, coal slag, glass, garnet, steel Type of Substrate or Product: Ferrous Metal, Drywall, CMU. Concrete, Fiberglass, Nonferrous metal, Surface Preparation Methods: Sandblasting, Abrasive and chemical techniques Preparation Methods: Abrasive blast Major Work Area: Fabrication, Assembly, New Construction, Existing Construction Specific Skills: Must know how to select appropriate abrasives. Operate equipment to prepare substrates for application of protective coatings. Operate equipment to perform surface preparation. Essential Skills: Must able to read specifications, reading text, document use, numeracy, writing and oral communication, working with others, problem solving, critical thinking, job task planning and organizing, significant use of memory, finding information and continuous learning.
