Since 1990 the Front St family of companies has been a leader in mental health support services in Santa Cruz and Monterey County. We are proud to be an integral part of a system that provides housing and behavioral health services for over 300 consumers. This position will be located at 7th Avenue Center, a 99 bed secured Mental Health Rehabilitation Center (MHRC) in Santa Cruz, CA. The services provided are for adults, aged 18 years and older, who come to us from throughout the State of California.

We are looking for On-Call, Part-Time, and Full-Time nursing staff. New graduates of LPT and LVN programs are welcome. You should be comfortable working with individuals who suffer from severe and persistent mental illness.
SUMMARY: Provide direct nursing care to residents according to physicians' orders and applicable resident care standards within their scope of practice. Provide direction to non- licensed staff in providing direct resident care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
DUTIES:
- Safely and properly administers medications and treatments.
- Participates in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing care given.
- Uses the nursing plan of care in daily assignments.
- Modifies residents' plan of care when needed.
- Observe, record and report the signs, symptoms, and behaviors including the physiological and psychological status of residents.
- Notifies appropriate supervisory and medical staff of changes in resident status; recognizes resident care priorities and potential resident care crises.
- Maintains resident privacy, confidentiality of information, and confidentiality of records.
- Executes written physician's orders in the delivery of nursing care.
- Adheres to required infection control and aseptic techniques in the delivery of resident care.
- Documents nursing care regarding a resident's condition, medication, and treatment in the resident's medical records and resident's weekly progress notes.
- Supervise the use of behavioral restraints in the case of imminent danger to self or others and ensuring resident rights and safety are upheld.
- Understand and utilize the facility's Electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR) to distribute resident medication orders; understand and utilize the facility's Electronic Medical Records Database for completing written documentation on resident care.
- Uphold all infection control standards.
- Attends and participates in staff meetings.
- Perform all duties in a professional manner.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Nursing and Nursing Department Manager.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Graduated from a Licensed Vocational Nurse, Licensed Psychiatric Technician, or Registered Nurse program.
- Current licensure as an RN, LVN, or LPT in the State of California.
- Read, speak and understand English with enough ability to read, analyze, and interpret the regulations and requirements for managing mental health rehabilitation centers.
- Ability to write general correspondence and procedures associated with projects being managed and the facility overall. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, residents, customers and the general public with awareness of multi-cultural considerations.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, and percentages associated with completing the requirements of the position.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in different situations.
- Must be able to adjust tasks in accordance with changing deadlines and priorities.
- Must be able to complete tasks and meet deadlines, problem solve on a daily basis and coordinate numerous activities at the same time.
- Must have adequate computer skills to utilize e-mail and word processing programs.
- Must demonstrate cultural competency.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must be fingerprinted and cleared by the Department of Justice and/or FBI. If fingerprints are not cleared, the job is rescinded.
- Must have a health examination including a screening for tuberculosis within 90 days prior to employment or within seven days after employment and at least annually thereafter. The examination shall indicate the person is physically able to perform assigned duties, and tests negative for tuberculosis.
- Valid California Driver's License and approval from the Company's vehicle insurance provider if required to drive.
- Current CPR and first aid certifications.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
- Employee is regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stand, walk and stoop, and may be occasionally required to kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Employee may be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Employee must be in good health, and physically, mentally, and occupationally capable of performing assigned tasks per Title 9 regulations.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee often works near moving mechanical parts.
- Job requires working with hazardous caustic household cleaning chemicals.
- Frequently works out of doors and in an office environment.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
- During the course of the job, the employee will be exposed to second hand smoke.
- During the course of the job, the employee will be interacting on a daily basis with individuals with a diagnosed mental illness. The actions of the residents may at times be unpredictable. Staff will experience verbal abuse and at times may be physically threatened.
