REPORTS TO: District Nurse

CLASS SUMMARY: The Building Nurse is responsible for providing and implementing direct and indirect healthcare to students, through the nursing process, in an educational setting.

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Assesses student health care status and needs and administers appropriate nursing care procedures utilizing applicable protocols, procedures, and care plans; manages and administers medications for students.
  • Develops and implements the health care component for IEP students.
  • Collaborates with school officials and community resources to improve services to students.
  • Develops and maintains applicable health records, ensuring the confidentiality of information; prepares and disseminates health concern listings of students to be shared with staff as appropriate.
  • Develops Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) for students with known health conditions that require interventions during the school day.
  • Develops emergency care plans for students with known health conditions.
  • Manages and implements school screening programs.
  • Surveys, reports, and assists in the prevention and control of communicable diseases in accordance with District policies.
  • Provides classroom instruction related to health and wellness under the supervision of a licensed school nurse.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level assign by District Licensed School Nurse
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Licensed by the State of Minnesota as a Nurse; or,
  • an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid License by the State of Minnesota as a Nurse
KNOWLEDGE:
  • Nursing principles and practices;
  • Clinical assessment methods;
  • Medication management and administration principles;
  • Communicable illnesses and diseases;
  • Public health principles, including community education.
SKILLS:
  • Assessing, implementing, and evaluating the health of students;
  • Managing medications and treatments;
  • Identifying and referring special needs students;
  • Preparing business communications;
  • Administering emergency care;
  • Administering hearing and vision screenings;
  • Developing and implementing safety, first aid, and emergency plans;
  • Identifying and tracking communicable disease outbreaks;
  • Preparing and maintaining health records;
  • Monitoring and maintaining health service supplies;
  • Maintaining confidentiality;
  • Facilitating classroom instruction;
  • Preparing newsletters and/or other informational communications;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, & repetitive motions.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to fumes, odors, blood and other bodily fluids, and travel.
