Job Title: Behavior Support Specialist & Coach

Location: SAU #53

Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Student Services
Job Summary: The Behavior Support Specialist is responsible for providing behavioral support to staff and students in SAU #53. This role involves working closely with students, teachers, staff, and families to design and implement individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs), support positive behavior practices, and educating educators on how to integrate students with behavior needs in the general education classrooms. The Behavior Support Specialist will use evidence-based strategies to help students improve social, emotional, and behavioral skills while fostering inclusion and academic success. This position will work in the five towns of SAU #53: Allenstown, Chichester, Deerfield, Epsom, and Pembroke
Key Responsibilities:
  • Coaching:
    • Support and educate special education teachers on how to conduct functional behavioral assessments (FBAs) to identify triggers, patterns, and functions of challenging behaviors.
    • Support and educate special education teachers on how to develop and implement individualized Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) based on assessment data.
    • Provide hands-on guidance to school staff on how to manage one-on-one or small group support for students exhibiting behavioral challenges.
    • Assist in implementing and monitoring progress of behavior interventions and adjusting strategies as needed.
    • Provide support, feedback, and ideas to classroom teachers on how to design space or implement accommodations in the classroom to support students with behavior needs.
  • Collaboration & Consultation:
    • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, special education staff, counselors, and school administration to coach the implementation of behavior support strategies.
    • Provide professional development and training for staff on behavior management techniques and intervention strategies.
    • Collaborate with families to address behavioral concerns and provide resources for community and home-based support.
    • Serve as a resource for teachers and staff in managing challenging behaviors in the classroom.
  • Data Collection & Reporting:
    • Assist teams in collecting and analyzing data on student behaviors, monitor progress, and provide reports to relevant stakeholders, including parents and administrators.
    • Maintain confidential records of student progress and intervention strategies.
  • Crisis Intervention & Support:
    • Provide immediate support and intervention during behavioral crises, utilizing de-escalation techniques to ensure the safety of students and staff.
    • Collaborate with school administrators and staff to develop and implement school-wide behavior management practices.
    • Assist schools in building internal capacity to manage challenging student behavior
  • Advocacy & Support:
    • Advocate for students with behavioral challenges to ensure access to FAPE, appropriate supports, and accommodations.
    • Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive school culture that promotes respect, responsibility, and safety for all students.
Qualifications:
  • Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Psychology, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
    • Minimum of five years of experience in a behavioral support role, preferably within a school setting.
    • Experience in conducting functional behavior assessments and developing behavior intervention plans.
    • Training in crisis intervention strategies (e.g., CPI, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, etc.).
    • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification is a plus.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong knowledge of evidence-based behavior management strategies and interventions.
    • Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
    • Knowledge of special education laws and regulations.
Working Conditions:
  • Full-time, on-site position during the school year.
  • Travel between five school districts will be necessary.
  • Ability to work in a variety of school settings, including classrooms, offices, and outdoor areas.
  • May involve working with students in crisis or challenging behavioral situations.
