The Hyperbaric Technician, under the direction of the Program Director, Clinical Coordinator, and Medical Director, administers hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients as prescribed by the Physician supervising HBO. Responsible for the safe and effective operation of the hyperbaric chamber(s) and the related support system(s).

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Assists in identification, orientation, and ongoing education of patients for HBO therapy.
  • Leads insurance pre-authorization and re-authorization process and completes checklist for each HBOT/potential HBOT client.
  • Prepares patients for treatment. Lifts or transfers patient into and out of the chamber, including use of Hoyer lift as necessary. Records complete and accurate medical data as it pertains to treatment in 2 systems. Does not leave patient(s) unattended during HBO treatment without qualified replacement to monitor safety and condition.
  • Utilizing data software for wound management makes accurate and appropriate entries for daily hyperbaric treatments and wound care clinic visits which may include photo uploading.
  • Apprises Center management immediately of patient care issues, complications, interruptions to treatment.
  • Performs hyperbaric chamber operations and system maintenance as required to ensure all safety requirements are met. Recommends safety policies and incorporates new safety procedures as appropriate. Is attuned to equipment operating malfunctions; reports, repairs, or seeks Clinical Engineer or manufacturer's assistance.
  • Following required training, conducts special studies testing for patients, including ABI, SPP, TCom. Reports finding to physician for his/her interpretation of exam for patients. Reports and documents results in all appropriate medical record systems.
  • As Center Safety Director, serves on Hospital Safety Committee ad hoc. Maintains ongoing, relevant communications with Hospital Safety Director. Responsible for Center safety program and orientation/training of new Center. Makes recommendations for safety protocols and policies. Maintains logs and manuals as directed by Hospital Safety Committee and Healogics; responds to emergency codes and other emergency situations. Assists with safe building oversight and performs semi-annual safety/fire drills.
  • Informs staff of any special work/environment conditions which may affect them or patient care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Completes department-specific orientation and annual competencies for this position.
Requirements for this position include:
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Associates degree preferred
  • Certified and/or licensed in one of the following vocations from an accredited institution and coursework: Respiratory Therapist, Diver Medic, Corpsman (from military), Medical Services Specialist, EMT, Paramedic, Registered Nurse, LPN, Medical Assistant (MA), Chamber Technician/Operator (from military), currently practicing Diving Medical Technician (DMT) or Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Word; able to navigate through internet and

    intranet; Able to learn internal clinical outcome database, upload photographs from camera required
  • Certified as a CHT or DMT within one year of hire. Must have completed a National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology approved hyperbaric medicine introductory course and if not previously completed at time of hire must attend this initial program and be completed before operating hyperbaric chambers. Attend an approved HBO Safety course within one year of hire; and attend an approved Hyperbaric Safety Director course within one year of hire. Complete competencies skill checklist and remain proficient in Hyperbaric competencies.
Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) scope of practice:
  • CHT is not an entry level qualification, rather an additional certification beyond the applicant's qualifying profession. Refer to the list below: (qualifying pathways)
