Lead Medical Lab Assist.

Performs venipunctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks to obtain blood samples for testing purposes. Properly identifies patients and follows procedures for collection of specimens. Ensures that all information from the blood collection of specimens is entered into the laboratory computer system including time drawn, time received, and proper phlebotomy code. Collects chain of custody urine drug screens for pre-employment, post-accident, and just cause cases using proper collection procedures as set forth by NIDA. Performs patient registrations. Performs activities and other tasks as necessary in a laboratory including centrifuging specimens, putting specimens on the analyzers, performing kit testing, entering charges. Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining clean rooms and equipment. Assists with receipt, ordering and stocking of materials. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the Laboratory. Performs assigned waived testing, assistance in moderately complex test, after competencies. Follows Lab procedures for specimen handling and processing. Adheres to the Lab's quality control procedures and other established testing policy and procedures. Responsible for the scheduling/training and assurance of competency for other MLA staff. Performs other related functions as assigned by the Laboratory Director. The Lead MLA demonstrates critical thinking skills and assist in assuring complete and accurate registration of patient orders.
Qualifications/Experience
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred including course in Phlebotomy.
Experience:
One to two years phlebotomy/ Lab Assistant/ Medical Assistant experience preferred.
License/ Certification
Must possess a Phlebotomy certification from an accredited program

- Always records phlebotomy collection information into the Laboratory Information System with accurate attention to name of patient, collection time, and receive time.
- Accurately and successfully performs venipunctures, following phlebotomy policies and procedures
- Accurately and successfully performs finger sticks on adult and pediatric patients, following phlebotomy policies and procedures.
- Accurately and successfully performs heel sticks on infants, following phlebotomy policies and procedures.
- Maintains phlebotomy carts and supply area in a clean and orderly fashion.
- Always follows patient identification policies and procedures. Labels samples in presence of the patient.
- Always labels specimens properly with all required information to meet TJC requirement
- Accurately collects chain of custody urine samples and completes collection documentation
- Always follows laboratory requirements for use of personal protection equipment.
- Willingly helps co-workers to complete section duties.
- Assists in receipt and processing of all specimens.
- Posts laboratory results in the appropriate area
- Willingly adaptable to changes in assignments and assignments at off-site locations.
