Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Recognize and detects signs of infectious disease, pain, discomfort or anxiety and alerts the Veterinarian. Provides daily treatments as directed by Veterinarian.

Performs walkthroughs of the shelter several times daily to find animals that require medical attention and alerts Veterinarian for treatment plan.

Speaks with adopters/potential adopters and co-workers when questions arise about medical conditions or animals at the shelter; provides foster parents, and owners, assistance and knowledge of how to care for the animals, administers medicines; places medications and microchip information into packs for adopters on pickup.

Performs emergency treatment upon sick and injured animals and administers follow-up treatment as advised by Veterinarian.

Prepares animals for surgeries, places animals on the surgery table, ensuring they are properly hooked up to the anesthesia machines and monitors all animals under anesthesia to ensure heart rate and respiration remain stable, assists the veterinarian during surgery, and monitors all animals post-surgery to ensure that they recover safely from anesthesia.

Compounds medications and injections for clinic and field usage.

Evaluates the condition of various sick animals that are brought to the clinic, including animals that are out on foster or who have been recently adopted; assists the veterinarian during exams and Rabies vaccinations.

Performs pre-surgical exams and assists veterinarian during surgery.

Operates an autoclave, ultra sonic cleaner, clinical scale, surgical lighting and any traditional equipment of an animal shelter clinic environment.

Cleans and prepares surgery room for the performance of surgical procedures. Cleans and disinfects clinic service exam room, intake exam room and treatment exam room.

Performs routine medical procedures upon adopted, incoming, and redeemed animals; prepares and administers vaccines, flea/tick prevention, blood testing and microchipping, administers oral and injectable medications; checks temperature; uses a microscope and other diagnostic equipment for the purpose of identifying parasitic conditions and diseases; conducts health exams and administers first-aid when necessary.

Cleans and disinfects kennels and cages in order to provide a suitable environment for the animals; makes routine inspections of animals and their cages for their health, welfare, safety and cleanliness. Cares for and feeds impounded animals. Performs humane euthanasia as needed to mitigate pain and suffering.

Updates and maintains records on animals processed through the clinic noting all actions taken and dates thereof.

Performs related work as assigned.

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
