Job description for hospitalist at Amberwell Atchison:
- Requirements: MD or DO with permanent KS license and DEA license and training in internal medicine or family medicine (in or completed ACGME accredited residency program)
- 24 hour shifts, up to 7 days in a row
- Average daily census is 9-12 patients, max of 21 patients on service including max of 4 ICU patients
- Multidisciplinary rounds start at 9am - this includes case management, pharmacy, social work, dietician, therapy, and nurses all of whom can help with placing orders determined on rounds, discharge planning, etc.
- Once rounds are complete, documentation, orders, etc can be completed off site and physician can be off site until rounds the next day
- Reasons to need to return prior to rounds the next day would be: a code blue on the floor, a patient changing from med/surg status to ICU status, a new ICU admission, or to transfer a patient to another hospital
- Once hospitalist is out of the building, can ask ER providers to put in bridge admission orders to get a patient through until rounds the next day
- Hospitalist does take calls from the ER for admissions or from the nurses on the floor with concerns, need for new orders, clarifying questions, etc.
- ICU is open, hospitalist cares for ICU patients - this may include ventilated patients or patients on any stabilizing drip (pressors, insulin, rate/rhythm control meds) - if expected to need long term ICU care, will likely transfer to tertiary care center
- Hospitalist is able to perform any procedures they feel comfortable with/have been trained to do, however this is not necessary:
- Help is available from anesthesia 24/7 for vascular access and intubation
- Help is typically available from general surgery for chest tubes, central line, I&D, thoracentesis, paracentesis
- Help is available from interventional radiology most weekdays during the day
- Cardiology available M-F (and by phone consult on weekends)
- Can call Mosaic or KU (nearby tertiary care centers) for other specialty phone consult assistance 24/7
- Hospitalist candidates need to be willing to document and place orders in electronical medical record, Meditech Expanse
For permanent hospitalist position, would prefer internal medicine residency graduate or family medicine residency graduate with at least 1 year experience in hospitalist work. Would also prefer physician with some leadership experience/desire to help lead inpatient service line (in conjunction with inpatient nursing director), develop standardized order sets, assist with nursing education and competencies, etc.
