The Statewide Services and Outreach (SSO) division of the Ohio School for the Deaf and the Ohio State School for the Blind is building a dynamic team to meet our goal of providing expert services and supports to all 88 counties in Ohio by 2025.

The SSO Team serves school districts and families throughout Ohio based on the following four pillars:

  • Community & Professional Partnerships
  • Student Evaluation Clinic
  • District Consultation & Educational Supports
  • Family Consultation & Supports
Services within these pillars include providing consultation and technical assistance for school districts, students, and families, maintaining communication and collaboration with state and national organizations, providing itinerate services with a focus on short term programming, and conducting assessments that provide data for districts to build Evaluation Team Reports (ETR).

What You'll Do:

Serves as a member of the Statewide Service and Outreach team to provide assistive technology assistance and support for the education of PreK through age 22 students who are blind/visually impaired and who may have additional and/or complex disabilities and/or neurologic involvements (e.g., CVI, TBI):

Provides troubleshooting and technical support to students and constituents (e.g., school personnel, agencies, IT departments, parents/guardians, community organizations); installs and updates software.

Serves as a liaison between school and statewide services personnel and hardware and software developers, vendors and customers.

Provides professional development and training on the use of assistive technology for teachers across Ohio and staff and students of the Ohio Deaf and Blind Education Services; works with innovative technology devices and platforms providing learning opportunities and training with Cadence Braille Tablets.

Maintains inventory of Braille note takers, embossers and other assistive technology; keeps detailed notes on equipment status and anticipates future needs.

Qualifications
  • Must maintain valid Ohio teaching licensure for grade level, subject area or special class assignment

    AND
  • Intervention Specialist (K-12) - Visual Impairments.*
*Intervention Specialist (K-12) - Visual Impairments certification/licensure may be attained within two years of employment.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology for the blind/visually impaired.
  • Ability to provide professional development and support for others.
  • Strong problem-solving, flexible thinking and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to become Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing electronic equipment (preferred).
