Summary:

  • Manages and is accountable for the effective direction and operation of the infection prevention program at Chester County Hospital (CCH). The IP Manager utilizes evidence-based practices such as those published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, they ensure compliance with regulation and requirements from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), The Joint Commission (TJC) other accrediting healthcare organizations, and the PA Department of Health regulations. All activity is aimed at preventing health care-associated infections (HAIs) by ensuring that sources of infections are isolated to limit the spread of infectious organization. This manager oversees the team of Infection Preventionists responsible for the surveillance and reporting of nosocomial infection, investigation of infection or clusters of infections as warranted, microbiological monitoring of the healthcare environment and remediation as warranted, targeted education, consultation, administration and continued professional development. This manager functions in ongoing collaboration with Infectious Disease to ensure infection prevention activities are delivered in a patient care department or area consistent with the mission and vision of the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure and conducts surveillance of nosocomial infections as well as targeted surveillance in problems areas is completed. Analyze, trend and distribute surveillance data to the Infection Control and Prevention Committee and unit specific and service-specific nosocomial infection reports as required for prevention activities and outbreak monitoring with specific patient populations. This includes physician and surgeon-specific wound infection rates to clinical department chairs for review and analysis regarding clinical practice.

  • Assure adherence to and notification requirements for NHSN, PA DOH, TJC and other regulatory bodies of required reportable diseases and nosocomial infections, accurately applying the appropriate definition, including accurate and relevant denominators for appropriate procedures. This includes coordinating the update and maintenance of the CCH Infection Control and Prevention Plan and risk assessment. Participate in continuous TJC survey readiness and triennial survey.

  • Develop and implement organizational HAI prevention of incidence goals and objectives based on organizational and Penn Medicine team goals. Provide ongoing assessment of the goals and objectives and specific needs of CCH with respect to nosocomial infection control. Maintain expertise in cleaning, disinfection and sterilization.

  • Assess the risk of infection posed by manufactured equipment and patient care items and provide infection control input as necessary, in decision regarding purchasing.

  • Collaborate with Environmental Services management regarding optimal methods of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of patient care equipment and with Plant Operations to provide leadership and support for all hospital construction projects. Within the hospital, this should include infection prevention environmental rounding and medical device rounding as well as observation of ongoing construction projects.

  • Coordinate with Employee Health Services, as it pertains to infection control, development and implement of processes for the prevention and management of exposure and infections in personnel.

  • Provide consultation to other departments, personnel, and community - including medical staff, to develop appropriate patient care guidelines and educational programs dealing with infection control, appropriate in scope and complexity for the intended audience.

  • Effectively use professional resources to find current, accurate information relating to nosocomial infection, utilizing these sources for continuous departmental team education to remain current to the practice of nosocomial infection control. Should maintain membership with APIC.

  • Develop and implement appropriate staffing and scheduling assignments, providing appropriate competency of staff in congruence with the scope and complexity of the patient population or infection control issue.

  • Accept departmental accountability for current and new practices, clinical programs and systems necessary to support changing patient infection prevention needs.

  • Accept organizational accountability for services provided to recipients. Participate in developing departmental and hospital policy and procedure and in the development of patient care standards, protocols and guidelines.

  • Evaluate job performance of Department personnel by completing staff performance appraisals and competency assessments and by performing monitoring performance on an ongoing basis.

  • Assure adherence to the Hand Hygiene program and monitor compliance. Ensure distribution of data to all departments

  • Ensure appropriate orientation, education, credentialing, and continuing professional development for assigned personnel. Using input from staff, oversee recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel that are representative of the population diversity. Utilize various motivational strategies to increase staff morale and provide counseling for employees as appropriate.

  • Organize and participate in regularly scheduled Hospital Infection Prevention meetings with dissemination of recommendations hospital wide.

  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization. Perform all employee duties within the Penn Medicine and entity values, policies and procedures.

Credentials:

  • Medical Lab Scientist ASCP (Required)

  • Current PA or Multi-state License or MLS ASCP

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)
