Job Summary:

JOB SUMMARY

Assesses nutrition status of patients with complex medical conditions, including performance of a nutrition-focused physical exam. Develops, implements and evaluates outcomes of nutrition care plan for patients, ensuring appropriate use of oral, enteral, and parenteral regimens. Develops, implements and evaluates nutrition education and counseling for patients, families and caregivers, and the community. Participates in the training of dietetic interns, students, and other health care professionals. Participates in clinical nutrition outcomes research and conducts independent outcomes research in area of clinical practice. Provides clinical supervision, oversight, and mentoring of staff working in assigned practice area.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assesses nutrition status, including performance of a nutrition-focused physical exam, and implements and adjusts nutrition care plans to address identified nutrition diagnoses for patients with complex medical conditions, including critically ill patients and patients on enteral and/or parenteral nutrition support, using extensive knowledge and expertise, the Nutrition Care Process and standardized nutrition terminology in documentation. Conducts nutrition outcomes research in area of clinical practice and/or conducts or participates in collaborative nutrition investigational research.

  • Identifies patients who meet the criteria for a medical diagnosis of malnutrition and documents criteria in the medical record.

  • Writes, accepts, and implements medical nutrition therapy and nutrition orders in eSTAR, including diet and infant feeding orders, enteral, and parenteral nutrition orders, according to the VUMC Standard Operating Procedure and RD/LDN Scope of Practice.

  • Provides nutrition counseling and education to patients, families and caregivers, and the community, using evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines, appropriate instructional methods and tools, and case management as needed to implement nutrition interventions.

  • Conducts nutrition telehealth, real-time HIPAA-compliant interactive audio and video telecommunications with patients, and monitors telehealth technologies for HIPAA compliance.

  • Trains dietetic interns, other students, and health care professionals by planning, implementing, supervising and evaluating clinical experiences and/or teaching classes.

  • Coordinates an area of specialty nutrition practice or service and provides clinical supervision, oversight and mentoring of Clinical Nutrition staff working in assigned practice area.

Contributes in the development of counseling best practices for the organization.

  • Supervisory Leadership (Novice): Conducts performance reviews. Effectively delegates tasks to others. Coaches’ subordinates on technical and interpersonal topics. Demonstrates team building techniques and provides leadership through personal example of good work habits, open communication and effective people relationships.
