Looking for an exciting summer job that's both fun and rewarding? We have an opportunity for you We are currently seeking enthusiastic individuals to join the Summer Season program as Recreation Leader II. As a Recreation Leader II, you will be responsible for organizing, conducting and supervising various recreational programs and activities. Your duties will include providing lead direction to others, organizing and instructing various programs, and ensuring that all activities are conducted safely and efficiently.

This class of job is distinguished from Recreation Leader I by its higher level of responsibility for recreation program work. This is a seasonal, hourly, at-will, part-time position, averaging approximately 20-25 hours per week. You will be required to work a variety of hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. We guarantee that this job will be a fun and rewarding experience for you
Mandatory Training Dates: All selected applicants MUST be available to attend the following mandatory training dates before their first day of work:
  • May 9 (Friday) from 12pm - 8pm - Recreation Staff Training (All Recreation and Park Services staff must attend)
  • May 10 (Saturday) from 8am - 5pm - Recreation Staff Training (All Recreation and Park Services staff must attend)
  • June 6-8 (Friday through Sunday) from 8am - 5pm - Aquatics Staff Training (Supplemental training for Lifeguards, Instructor Guards, Senior Guards, and Recreation Leaders I and II under Aquatics)
Essential Duties
Depending on assignment, essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Organizes, conducts and supervises free play and team activities for children and adults on outdoor and indoor play areas; officiates and instructs in games such as basketball, softball, football, baseball, volleyball, track and field.

Instructs fundamentals of play and sports conduct in recreational activities, organizes and conducts non-athletic events and programs including contests, special activity days, tournaments, and holiday programs; instructs and supervises in arts and crafts, singing and dancing and day care.

Organizes club activities, collects and accounts for money received; keeps records and prepares reports.

Supervises overall activities of playground or other sites; observes and monitors activities of participants to ensure that park rules and regulations are followed and that equipment is used in a safe manner; administers first aid as needed.

Assists in maintaining recreational facility by performing light custodial maintenance.

Qualification Guidelines
Knowledge of: recreation planning and administration; the equipment, facilities, operations, and techniques used in a community recreation program; the policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using the recreational facilities and equipment; first aid techniques.
Ability to: develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program; supervise and monitor games and team activities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors, and the general public; communicate effectively orally and in writing; plan and supervise the work of paid staff and volunteers. The ability to speak Spanish is desirable.

Education and/or Experience
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. Example combinations include:

One year experience, paid or volunteer, as a leader in a recreational activity which included cashier and recordkeeping duties.

Special Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age or enrolled in college. Assignments in child care require completion of 9-semester units and current enrollment in 3-semester units of early childhood education or possess an ECE credential. The City of Norwalk requires a tuberculosis test.

BENEFITS FOR HOURLY/AT-WILL/PART-TIME EMPLOYEES
Terms of Employment: All employees hired as Hourly/At-Will/Part-Time are employed "at-will" throughout the term of their employment with the City. Consequently, the services of a Hourly/At-Will/Part-Time employee can be discontinued at anytime without cause, regardless of the number of hours worked for the City by the employee.

Retirement: Membership in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) is required. The employee pays the 7.5% retirement contribution.

Credit Union: The City is affiliated with the Los Angles County F & A Federal Credit Union. Please check with the Department of Human Resources for details.

Employee Assistance Program: An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to provide help to employees and members of their families who are experiencing personal problems. For more information, contact the Department of Human Resources.

Paid Holidays: After 3,000 hours of employment, an hourly employee is entitled to six hours pay for specified holidays designated in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Vacation Leave: After 3,000 hours of employment, vacation leave is accumulated at the rate of .046 hours for each hour of straight time worked.

Sick Leave: Beginning on the 30th day of employment with the City, employee will accrue sick leave at the rate of .033 hours for each hour of straight time worked. No sick leave shall be taken until the 90th day of employment. After 3,000 hours of employment, sick leave is accumulated at the rate of .046 hours for each hour of straight time worked.

Medical Plan: Eligibility for medical coverage is determined using the Affordable Care Act guidelines. Employees may also qualify after 3,000 hours of employment.

Voluntary Insurance Plans: Optional Short Term Disability, Hospitalization, Accident and Cancer insurance policies are available at the employee's cost.

Veteran's Preference: The City provides preference to military veterans under consideration for initial employment. To claim veteran's preference an applicant must submit their most recent DD214 form. An eligible veteran is one who has served in the United States armed forces and who has received an honorable discharge.
