GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, performs quality diagnostic MRI scans. The MRI Technologist will have an above average knowledge of MRI equipment. Complies with performance measures and/or activities to assure patient/customer satisfaction results, clinical quality benchmarks, and operational financial targets are constantly maintained. Complies with and participates in maintaining an environment which supports our philosophy and values.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Experience
Identifies opportunities to improve patient experience. Participates in projects/programs designed to enhance service delivery and patient satisfaction.

Patient/Staff/Environmental Safety
Identifies opportunities to improve the Environment of Care, and patient and staff safety. Participates in projects and programs designed to create a safe environment to avoid error.

Job Specific Duties
Demonstrates complete working knowledge of all equipment. Maintains clinical proficiency.
Performs weekly safety warm-up and quality control checks for MRI equipment/computers with documentation.
Prepares patient for procedure by confirming patient identification, noting appropriate medical history, carefully screening patients for magnetic safety, noting the correct physician referral and maintaining rigid adherence to the department safety standards.
Transfers patients to MRI table, assists patients with positioning, applies immobilization devices and coils as necessary. Explains procedures to patients to allay apprehensions and illicit cooperation.
Performs MR scans on neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients at all levels of acuity, according to physician orders and department policies and procedures. Whenever applicable, demonstrates understanding of the needs of specific age groups in terms of their physical and motor development, psychosocial development and intellectual/language development.
Communicates with physicians and patient care areas regarding nonscheduled exams. Coordinates pre-exam, exam and post-exam activities to ensure accurate and timely outcomes.
Performs venipuncture for administration of IV contrast as per policy.
Responsible for accurate patient information on all films, radiology requisitions and in the PACS. Delivers completed exams to the file room ASAP for assembly and reading.
Enters post procedure information into the RIS system to assure accurate billing and radiology history for each patient.
Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and needed repairs.
Ensures necessary maintenance and repairs are completed in an efficient and timely manner.
Instructs and demonstrates MR equipment operation, filming and other technical aspects for Radiology students and/or hospital Radiology personnel.
Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature, and attending related conferences, seminars and the like.
Adheres to and performs in accordance with the hospital and department procedures to safety, infection control, fire and disasters.
Provides MRI services on-call during off hours as necessary.
Aids physician in localizing lesions during MRI breast biopsies.
May be asked to represent the MRI Section in one or more of the following areas:

Collects and analyzes information about the patient and the environment for use in promoting and maintaining patient safety.

Maintains department specific accountabilities as determined, maintained, and housed within each unit s Scope of Service.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Education
Knowledge of radiology standards and procedures as they relate to MRI normally acquired through graduation of an approved radiology school, an Associate s Degree in Radiology, or sufficient on the job training to meet ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologist) certification requirements.
Additional courses with computer skills credits in cross sectional anatomy and/or credits in computer technology desired.

Experience
One year of clinical experience in diagnostic imaging is beneficial to enhance and develop skills.
Previous experience in MRI Technology and cross sectional anatomy beneficial.

Required
Current BLS certification or obtained within 90 days of hire - All clinical personnel in identified job codes are required to maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) training through independent study, online manikin and knowledge testing. An acceptable training program is the Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider course from the American Heart Association or the client Professional Rescuer Program with AED. (See Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training Policy).
Other
Current ARRT MRI registry certification or ARMRI certification to be completed within two years of hire strongly encouraged.
Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiography, ARRT(R);or ARRT(R) eligible with registry certification obtained within three months of hire. ARRT registry desired.
Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients, physicians, and co-workers who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
Analytical skills in order to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of MR techniques and methods.
Knowledge of cross sectional anatomy in order to obtain quality images.
Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for approximately 75% of work time when operating equipment, manipulating, reproducing images and dealing with patient records, as well as the ability to work effectively under stressful conditions and during irregular hours.

Annual Competencies
Annual competencies as required by Aspirus and/or various regulatory agencies based on entity and/or job position.
