Description: The primary responsibilities for this position include to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels, publish, and secure external funding for research in areas related to the Design of Mechanical Systems, including: Mechanical Engineering Principles: Expertise in the design, analysis, and optimization of mechanical systems, with strong knowledge of statics, dynamics, strength of materials, and heat transfer. Mechanical Design: Proficiency in computer-aided design ( CAD ) software for creating detailed designs, as well as experience in conceptualizing, modeling, and prototyping mechanical components and systems. Component Analysis: Application of design thinking and systems thinking to mechanical component design. Materials Selection: Knowledge of material selection criteria and manufacturing processes. Finite Element Analysis ( FEA ): Ability to simulate and analyze the behavior of mechanical components and structures under various loads and conditions. AI/ML in Mechanical Systems: Capability to integrate and teach Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) methods for system design, development, analysis, and manufacturing. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, serving on committees, engaging in program assessment and service to the department, College, and University as needed. Primary Function of Organizational Unit: N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. The College of Engineering ( COE ), with over 2,577 students, has 5 Doctoral programs, 8 Masters of Science Degree programs, and EAC ABET accredited undergraduate programs in Architectural, Bio-, Biological, Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as a CAC ABET -accredited program Computer Science. The Mechanical Engineering Department has 15 full-time faculty members and offers BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees. The department enrolls over 451 undergraduate students, 25 masters and 26 doctoral students. The department currently offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees in Mechanical Engineering. The ME undergraduate degree program has an Aerospace Option for students who are interested in aerodynamics, aero-propulsion, avionics and aero-structures. An Honors program is available for those students with a strong academic background and research interest. Our faculty members and their graduate students perform research in such areas as materials, aerospace, structural health monitoring, thermal management, micro-mechanics and micro-fluidics, CFD , control systems, design, robotics and manufacturing. Requirements: A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, conferred by the time of appointment. Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills. A commitment to engaging and conducting research within a technically diverse, multicultural community of faculty and students. Dedication to advancing engineering education and research in the field of Mechanical Systems Design through innovative pedagogical practices. A proven record of research and scholarship in the area of Mechanical Systems Design. Interest in interdisciplinary research and the ability to contribute to at least one of the College’s five research focus areas: Energy and Sustainability Cybersecurity and Network Operations Health Care Applications Multiscale Materials Aerospace and Transportation Applications Preferred: A minimum of five years of post-doctoral, industrial, or government experience in the field of Mechanical Systems Design. A Professional Engineer (PE) License is strongly encouraged but not required. A proven track record of effective teaching and scholarly publications in the area of Mechanical Systems Design. A demonstrated commitment to service at the community, university, and professional levels. A history of mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.
