DEFINITION:

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the surgical technologist assists in the delivery of patient care as a member of the surgical team and assumes appropriate responsibility for delivery of that care before, during and after surgery.

EDUCATION:

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS (IF APPLICABLE):

Certification as a Surgical Technician. CST or TS-C

BLS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technology.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Participates and implements age specific care and interaction.
    1. Employee has attended departmental orientation (training) and annual inservice education for age specific training and implements in the work area what was learned in age specific training.
    2. Employee maintains current competencies and certifications .
2.Patient safety.
  1. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical errors.
  2. Ensures: Correct Site Procedure; Correct Counts; Fire Safety checks; All Equipment and Supplies available and ready for patient procedure.
3.Provides a sterile atmosphere before and during all surgical procedures.
  1. Instruments and supplies are opened following established procedures to maintain a sterile field.
  2. A sterile field is set up and maintained before and during the procedure. The scrub remains aware of themselves and staff in OR suite and how they impact the sterile environment.
4.Maintains clean, safe and sanitary environment, before, during and after all procedures.
  1. Performs accurate sponge, needle and instrument counts.
  2. Operating Rooms are cleaned according to established procedures
  3. Performs safe passing of instruments and sharps, to and from surgeon/field, minimizing potential for incident of injury or exposure.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

HAND AND ARM USE:
  1. Must possess sufficient dexterity to pass instruments, thread suture on to needles and hold retractors.
LIFTING AND CARRYING:
  1. Requires continuous lifting of supplies and instrument trays in excess of 25 lbs.
PUSHING AND PULLING:
  1. Require transfers and transports of patients, equipment and carts of instruments.
STANDING/WALKING/SITTING/CLIMBING:
  1. Must be able to stand for more than 75% of the workday.
  2. Could be required to stand in excess of 12 hours at a time.
  3. Must be able to walk throughout the hospital.
  4. Must be able to climb stairs and use step stools.
SENSE OF TOUCH:
  1. Must be able to determine if an item from the autoclave is too hot to be used for patient care.
HEARING:
  1. Be able to hear the phone, overhead page and audible signals form equipment indicating that it is faulty.
VISION:
  1. Must be able to read charts and preference cards for the different surgical procedures.
BENDING /STOOPING:

1. Required to walk, reach or stoop 80% of the day.

SQUATTING:

1. Must be able to retrieve stock supplies located on lower shelves.

TWISTING:

1.Must be able to twist while holding 10 lbs and transferring it to different locations.

REACHING:

1.Must be able to work off of a table 30 inches deep.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

MATHEMATICS:
  1. Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
MEMORY:
  1. Must be able to remember sequence of order for instrumentation used in particular procedures.
LANGUAGE ABILITY:

READING:
  1. Must be able to read surgeon's preference cards.
WRITING:
  1. Must be able to write labels for all instrument trays and preference cards.
SPEAKING:
  1. Must be able to communicate in English and in a clear and pleasant voice.

Comanche County Memorial Hospital will pay the agreed upon All Inclusive hourly rate for orientation hours once the Agency Professional successfully works one-hundred eight (108) hours. In the event Agency Professional does not successfully complete 108 working hours, Agency agrees orientation time is non-billable. Facility agrees to orient Agency Professional to utilize Kronos Time and Attendance. Agency Professional must document all worked hours in the Kronos system. Agency Professional will not receive any compensation outside of the worked hours documented in the Kronos system.
