Job Description

School Nurse

Reports to: Building Principal

Supervises: Assistant

Qualifications: Valid R.N. license or higher

Job Goal: Oversee student health services and provide care for students experiencing illness or injury at school.

Employment Terms: 10 month contract

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Evaluation: Annually pursuant to Oklahoma law by building principal

Regular Requirements: Stand for extended periods; sit for extended periods; twist at the neck and trunk; bend at the waist; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; lift/move up to 40 pounds; handle objects and tools with hands and operate equipment; repetitive use of fingers and hands to operate equipment

Occasional Requirements: Reach with hands and arms overhead, above shoulder and horizontally; lift/move up to 50 pounds; ability to administer CPR

Visual Requirements: Close, color, peripheral, depth perception, ability to adjust focus

Hearing/Speaking Requirements: Adequate to exchange information

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Administer appropriate first aid, medication and specialized treatments to students.
  1. Assist students with activities of daily living such as coming hair, brushing teeth, and changing clothes.
  1. Record and maintain school health records, including logs of visitors to the nurse's office, in a confidential and organized manner.
  1. Contact parents as needed regarding sick or injured children, screening results or other health matters.
  1. Coordinate with outside agencies and administer mandated health screenings.
  1. Assess individual student situations for possible referral, including safety, abuse, drug use, etc.
  1. Provide student education and training regarding health and safety issues as requested by the building principal or teachers.
  1. Collaborate with special education director in developing health plans for students with special needs.
  1. Attend meetings requested by director, principal or teachers.
  1. Maintain confidential student health files.
  1. Annually review student records to ensure compliance with immunization requirements.
  1. Annually review all student health policies and procedures and submit proposed changes to the superintendent by May 1st of each year.
  1. Maintain and dispose of medications in accordance with district policy.
  1. Regularly participate in appropriate professional development opportunities.
  1. Comply with all federal, state and local laws and board policies and procedures.
  1. Utilize professional behavior in all school related interactions.
  1. Perform all other tasks as requested by supervisor.
