School Registered Nurse

Registered Nurse needed for a one-on-one off campus nursing support for a student attending the Ohio State School for the Blind.

Qualifications:
  • College graduate with not less than an Associate Degree in Nursing or an allied field
  • Current Ohio Registered Nurse License
Reports to: Superintendent

Job Goal: To promote, protect, maintain, improve, and coordinate the school health program for students on a district-wide basis

Health Service Responsibilities of the School Registered Nurse:
  • Coordinates health status of students by means of a health appraisal (recommended at grades kindergarten or first, three, five, seven, and nine) which includes:
  • height and weight as an assessment of growth, development and nutritional status;
  • vision screening, including visual acuity, accommodative ability, muscle balance and color deficiency;
  • hearing screening by audiometer;
  • dental inspection;
  • objective appraisal of personal hygiene and personal appearance;
  • evaluation of immunizations and health history;
  • scoliosis screening (grades 6-7-8) and
  • blood pressure screening (grades 6-8).
  • Coordinates health screening on students suspected of having health problems by the school staff, the student, or the student's parents.
  • Refers students with suspected health problems and incomplete immunizations to an appropriate source of health care through consultation with the student and the parents or guardian.
  • Provides and coordinates continuous follow-up on suspected health problems and incomplete immunizations through parents and teacher conferences, administrative consultation, home visits and conferences with the student's physician, dentist and/or clinic.
  • Maintains constant communication with the Superintendent, principals, supervisors, and teachers as to health problems that might interfere with learning, and uses their feedback to help evaluate district-wide student health needs.
  • .Assists the principals, attendance personnel and clerical staffs to control and to report communicable diseases among the students and school staff.
  • Uses professional knowledge and experience in evaluating the signs and symptoms of illness at school and recommends proper management of the student to the principal and the student's family.
  • Interprets, implements, and coordinates first aid care according to the Fairfield County School Nurses handbook and maintains first aid supplies and equipment necessary for the efficient functioning of the health coordinator district-wide.
  • Interprets, implements, and coordinates the laws regarding immunizations by maintaining current health records and by promoting compliance with the laws through referral to health facilities.
  • Recommends student exclusion to the school principals when health requirements are not met.
  • Reviews the final district-wide Immunization Report, copies and sends, in a timely manner.
  • Serves as health consultant in the interdisciplinary approach to student problems in all matters of school health to students, parents, school personnel, private and public health agencies and community agencies.
  • Coordinates the annual kindergarten pre-school registration each spring.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
Health Education Responsibilities of the School Registered Nurse:
  • Uses every opportunity to promote and coordinate positive health knowledge and practice by students, parents, and the school faculty, including the need for continuous medical and dental care, utilization and support of health agencies, and compliance with health regulations of the school, community, and state.
  • Participates with district-wide study group meetings as health consultant whenever possible or necessary.
  • Cooperates with the school administration and staff by assisting with health consultant oriented career clubs and promotes health careers among the students.
  • Functions as a health resource person by coordinating classroom activities, coordinating sources of reference or audio-visual aids and assisting in health content planning.
  • Coordinates information to students and their families to evaluate and utilize community health care resources.
  • Assumes responsibility for teaching school staff to observe children for health problems and to care for minor illness and injury.
  • Coordinates the Emergency Medical Authorization procedures.
Role of the School Registered Nurse:
  • Coordinates with the principals and custodians in periodic evaluation of safety and sanitation of district buildings and grounds.
  • Coordinates with school staff, parents' groups and students in promoting school safety and sanitation.
  • Coordinates and implements health and safety laws as they apply to laboratories, shops, lunchrooms, classrooms, and playground.
Professional Responsibilities of the School Registered Nurse:
  • Promotes and participates in professional organizations, the Fairfield County School Nurses, committees, in-service education, inter-departmental and inter-agency conferences.
  • Maintains highest standards of nursing ethics and practice as it applies to the school health program.
  • Constantly guards the dignity of district students, families and the school through proper confidentiality of health, academic, and social records.
  • Uses every opportunity to update and improve knowledge of health and the school age child.
  • Performs school nurse functions with professional responsibility, cooperative spirit and personal interest.
Other:
  • Coordinates school health programs on a district-wide basis.
  • Is actively involved in the establishment and revision of school district health policies.
  • Orders and distributes health supplies and equipment.
  • Prepares and submits reports for the Superintendent and the State Board of Health.
Additional Working conditions:
  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions, i.e., being prepared to come to school on all scheduled work days
  • Frequent and regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, climb, kneel, and stoop
  • Occasional requirement to carry, lift, push, and pull items up to a maximum of 50 pounds
  • Ability to meet physical requirements on a daily basis

Terms of employment: Salary, work year, and terms and conditions of employment are determined by the Liberty Union-Thurston Board of Education in compliance with policy.

Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated by the Superintendent/Designee in compliance with LU-T Board Policy, ODE and State of Ohio Revised Code.
