Who are we?

When health insurance companies deny medical treatments, our tech-enabled service uses AI to write appeals for patients, with a 90% success-rate in overturning denials. Check out our website here.

Our founding team: Alex was a product manager at Meta and Microsoft and a serial startup founder (including as a technical founder), and Haley was an engineer at a top healthtech company (Medtronic). Malcolm led a healthcare nonprofit and has been writing insurance appeals for 3+ years. The founding team is all Stanford graduates.

Our progress so far:
  • Spent 18 months finding product-market fit as a services business and have an established operational process.
  • Won patients $2.5M in health insurance coverage. (We've been operating since May 2023, generating revenue from day 1 as a bootstrapped services business.)
  • Won the Stanford Impact Founder and IDIF fellowships, as well as seven startup competitions. Here is a Stanford article about us.

  • We have more customer-demand than we can serve.
We have VC funding and ample runway.

Who are you?

An ambitious full-stack software engineer who likes fast-paced, early-stage startups. You're excited about helping individuals fight bureaucracies.

This role is a great fit someone who wants to be in the driver's seat of building the next generation of our technology rather than reporting directly to a CTO (we will have a senior technical advisor on payroll to support you; more info on that below). We have a roadmap ready to go that's been validated by 18 months of optimizing our services with customers.

Job Responsibilities
  • Build out tech to automate our processes. Over time, this automation will culminate in a full tech product.
  • Flesh out our generative AI capabilities, which are already scoped-out. Foundational model training and fine-tuning won't be necessary.

We will have a technical advisor (a very senior software engineer with expertise in our niche) on payroll who will mentor you, advise on technical decision-making, and dive into the codebase when necessary, but you'll be in the driver's seat.

Pending performance and your interest, there is an opportunity for future promotion to Chief Technology Officer.

Qualifications

We're open to adjusting the below requirements for the right candidate.

Required qualifications:
  1. 2+ years of software engineering experience.
  2. Ability to work in person at least 3 days per week on average in NYC or San Francisco
  3. Entrepreneurial spirit: self-starting, scrappy, growth mindset, ability to collaborate with a team, and comfort with ambiguity.
Preferred qualifications:
  1. 4+ years of software engineering experience
  2. Experience working at an early-stage startup
  3. Experience building a tech-enabled service (streamlining/automating manual workflows)
  4. Experience applying generative AI in business and operational contexts (foundational AI or fine-tuning experience not necessary)
  5. Experience building products or services in the healthcare industry, or even better, healthcare revenue cycle management

Background on health insurance denials: 15% of all health insurance claims are denied, and denial-rates rose by 18% from 2020 to 2023, in part due to insurance companies using AI to deny claims. Less than 1% of patients appeal their denials, yet over 40% of those appeals are successful. (And our appeals have a denial-overturn rate of >90%.)

Our tech stack: Currently, we are operating our service with a combination of manual and automated workflows using off-the-shelf tools. For our next phase of AI development, our initial plan is to use Langchain and specialized AI offerings (RAG, web agents, phone agents, etc.). For our overall tech stack, we're currently planning to use React (or Vue), Django, MySQL, and AWS (or GCP), but we're open to changing this to any common tech stack based on what the hired engineer has experience with.
