Surgical Technician

Position Summary

The MNCC Surgical Technician is responsible to assist in surgery as the role of a scrub person following all of the recommended practices outlined in the Association of Operating Room Nurses Recommended Practices. Under the supervision of a registered professional nurse, performs technical skills before, during and after deliveries using evidence based practice focusing on excellent outcomes and patient experience within the framework of Shared Governance. Assumes responsibilities of a unit coordinator on the unit as needed. Will maintain a safe and orderly environment for MNCC. Under the supervision of the RN provides quality nursing care through the application of the nursing process

Primary Position Responsibilities

1. Perform scrub technician duties and other tasks related to surgical procedures following strict aseptic technique in MNCC procedural areas. Assists in setting up the OR for surgical procedures by arranging instruments and other surgical items needed by the physician. Assists during the procedure as a scrub person, handling instruments, sponges, sutures etc. to the surgeon and performs all the required OR counts with the circulating RN. Handles all surgical specimens per policy.

2. Assists with patient care as directed by RN. Takes vital signs- B/P, pulse respiratory rate and temperature. Performs pre-operative surgical preps. Empties foley's and records output. Assists with ADL's. Assists with discharge of patients.

3. Assists with maintaining a safe and orderly environment including supply and linen areas. Cleans the OR and Delivery room after each delivery. Replaces used supplies. Maintains instrument trays per policy and procedure. Cleans and maintains equipment.

4. Performs clerical paperwork to ensure daily operations. Properly labels all chart materials, requisitions and laboratory orders. Assists in completion of all necessary logs. Directs all incoming phone calls and relays messages appropriately. Assist in ordering supplies from Distribution to maintain par levels.

5. Is customer focused in all interactions. Answers call lights and phones in a courteous, polite and prompt manner. Appropriately follows through in patient issues and elevates concerns following chain of command.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

Required:
• Has successfully completed a nationally or regionally accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains surgical technologist certification is required.

Minimum Years of Experience (Amount, Type and Variation):

Required:
• None

Preferred:
• One year experience as a Surgical Technician or related area.

License, Registry or Certification:

Required:
• Current Surgical Technology Certification or obtained within 1 year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:

Required:
• Must pass annual clinical competency based program and mandated in-service education. Unit specific skills may include but not limited to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. They will demonstrate expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique. Skills will be determined by a challenge exam and/or skill performance or by completion of a Staff Development course.
