Wage Information

The City of Canton Water Department is seeking an individual for the position of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Intern. The intern is responsible for assisting staff and management in the development and maintenance of GIS projects and databases.

Salary Range: $10.87 - $17.68

Job Description
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver's license, and have completed or be enrolled in a recognized curriculum at an institution of higher education in Geographical Information Systems or a closely related program.

Applicants for this position should have the following skills and abilities:
  • Experience in GIS (Geographic Information Systems), cartographic design, and data management best practices.
  • Experience editing existing geodatabases, relational databases and shapefiles.
  • Knowledge of basic GPS techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic civil engineering drawings.
  • Enter new map data from various sources including but not limited to AutoCAD drawings and hard copy maps.
  • Proficient with computer hardware and software including Microsoft Office, email, and internet browser programs.
  • Work in outdoor (collecting data) and indoor (office) environments.
  • Ability to work independently and accomplish assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
This is a non-union, temporary position, working 20-40 hours a week.

The Civil Service Department will send eligible candidates to participating departments.

Participation Requirements: Students who are selected for the program are required to meet the below minimum requirements to remain an intern. If they fail to adhere to these standards, the students may be dismissed from the program.
  • Students must maintain enrollment with an accredited college or university during the internship.
  • Adherence to all City and department policies regarding attendance, work hours, computer usage rules, attire, conduct, and behavior.
  • Timely completion of all assigned tasks and responsibilities.
  • Remain professional and respectful when working with fellow employees, supervisors, and members of the public

City of Canton permanent, full-time employees (working 30 hours per week or more) and their eligible dependents become eligible for comprehensive health benefits on the first day of the month following 60 days of employment.
