This position provides multiculturally-sensitive brief counseling (virtual and in person) and performance enhancement services for student athletes with diverse presenting concerns.

What You'll Do

  • Provide multiculturally-sensitive brief counseling (virtual and in person) and performance enhancement services for student athletes with diverse presenting concerns.
  • Provide clinical services including, but not limited to, diagnostic assessment, treatment planning, short-term individual counseling, group counseling crisis intervention services, psychoeducation, and case management for student-athletes.
  • Administer and document mental health screenings, risk assessments and reduction interventions.
  • Provides consultation and outreach to counseling center and student life, student-athletes, coaches, and athletics administration.
  • Complete required CCCPS documentation on an electronic health record system and quality assurance activities including routine monitoring and management of student treatment compliance (i.e., missed appointments, cancellations, etc.) in accordance with agency policies and state and federal regulations.
  • Attend case conference, committees, task forces, and other meetings related to the missions of CCCPS and WVU Intercollegiate Athletics.
  • Provide clinical supervision to trainees and facilitates didactic seminars on a variety of clinical, professional and wellness topics.
  • Facilitates student-athlete access and transition to appropriate mental health providers for ongoing pharmacologic and longer term or specialized behavioral therapies as appropriate.
  • In coordination with CCCPS leadership and Intercollegiate Athletics leadership and other campus collaborators, develops and supports various initiatives to promote student-athlete health, resilience and wellness.
  • Represent the University on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character and will exhibit ethical behavior; must respect the rights and dignity of individuals with sensitivity to problems that may arise from gender, racial, ethnic and sexual orientation and other differences.
  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports within the intercollegiate athletic program and broader mental health initiatives at WVU.
  • Possess the ability to adapt to evolving, complex situation, make decisions and work independently; position must have the ability to build and maintain relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff members other clinicians, and constituencies; required to use creative abilities to develop new techniques and approaches in dealing with many issues controlled by this position.
  • Manage sensitive and confidential information related to student-athletes, coaches and staff utilizing discretion and correct decisions. Manage professional and personal time to handle time sensitive-issues, tight deadlines, extended hours beyond the normal workday, weekend work and on-call availability.
  • Faithfully and diligently execute related duties of the department, as requested or assigned by the leadership at Athletics and CCCPS-to include attending sports practices, games and team events that may occur afterhours.
Qualifications
  • Completed MA/MS/MSW degree from an accredited counseling, psychology or social work (or related field) program.
  • Completed doctoral degree in Counseling, Sport, Clinical Psychology (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., or Psy.D.) from an APA-accredited program (preferred but not required).
  • Minimum of 500 hours - Supervised practica in providing psychological services, including adult outpatient individual counseling / therapy, group psychotherapy, and assessment.
  • One (1) or more years - Clinical/Performance Enhancement experience with student athletes.
  • Knowledge, skills, and expertise required to proficiently conduct, document and evaluate risk assessments and engage in safety planning.
  • Knowledge, skills, and expertise required to proficiently conduct, document and evaluate individual, and counseling, crisis intervention, and consultation/outreach with a student athlete population.
  • Knowledge and experience associated with performance improvement and performance psychology as they apply to work with high level athletes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural humility and affirmative care for all students but especially student athletes.
  • Knowledge, skills, and expertise required to proficiently conduct and evaluate supervision and/or training.
  • Ability to utilize an electronic health record system.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the culture associated with collegiate athletics.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to use email, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to travel to regional campuses and other venues as necessary.
  • Geographical availability to provide timely on campus emergency responses during on call weeks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with a team.
  • Demonstrated experience with substance use disorder treatment with a college-aged population.
  • Knowledge, skills, and expertise required to proficiently provide care management and to actively identify and decrease barriers to care.
  • Skills and abilities required to assess and respond to unpredictable clinical presentations and related calls from campus and parent stakeholders in the context of ethical and legal parameters.
  • Practical and ethical knowledge regarding the provision of telehealth services.
  • Supervised practica in providing psychological services, including adult outpatient individual counseling / therapy, group psychotherapy, and assessment.
  • Clinical/Performance Enhancement experience.

Requirements

Licensed (or license-eligible within 18 months-six months preferred) as a Counselor, Social Worker or Psychologist within the State of West Virginia.
CMPC or CMPC eligible (preferred but not required)
