GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Charge Nurse assists in the organization and daily function of the operating rooms, oversees patient care activities and maintains a high standard of safety for the patient and other staff members.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:

  • Manage the surgical area both operationally and fiscally.

  • Coordinate efficient and fair staffing daily, based on schedule and procedural needs

  • Coordinate staff breaks and lunches.

  • Monitor case progress and times, respond to issues to minimize delays, and maintain smooth case flow. Communicate all delays and issues to manager;

  • Provide direction and guidance for staff members concerning individual competencies.

  • Assist perioperative personnel in the evaluation of current practice through quality and performance improvement activities.

  • Conduct OR orientations.

  • Coordinate, facilitate, and manage change within the surgical area.

  • Coordinate with medical staff and management team to utilize resources considering patient care, patient census, patient acuity, allocation of resources, and unit environment.

  • Monitor that necessary personnel, equipment, and supplies are available.

  • Updating and maintenance of surgeon preference cards.

  • Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.

  • Other responsibilities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and ability to perform the essential functions:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.

  • Current unrestricted NYS RN license.

  • BCLS and ACLS required. PALS preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years’ recent experience as an OR Nurse, preferably in an Ambulatory Surgery Center.

  • Charge experience preferred.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferred

OTHER INFORMATION

  • This position requires periodic travel to and between practice locations and related companies, as needed and required

  • Reliable transportation is essential.
