A Brief Overview Responsible for providing respiratory care in a professional manner based on provider orders and the process at Children's Home Healthcare; Provides appropriate respiratory care specific to the pediatric population in accordance with policy/procedure. Assesses, plans and implements appropriate therapies based on the cardiopulmonary needs of the patients and evaluates effectiveness of respiratory plan of care. Essential Functions Provides respiratory care specific to the pediatric population in a professional manner based on provider orders and the process at Children’s Home Healthcare Where services include home durable medical equipment management including education, troubleshooting and maintenance.. • Provides appropriate respiratory care specific to the pediatric population in accordance with policy/procedure. Assessments completed according to policy/ orders. Ensures safety of child is met. • Demonstrates knowledge of age specific or developmental milestones for infant, toddler, preschool, school age or adolescent. Assesses/reassesses the cardiopulmonary needs of the pediatric patient according to the department/area standards including age specific needs. • Demonstrates accurate documentation in clinical set ups, education and follow up home visits. • Demonstrates competency in identified technical skills for the respiratory department. Completes all required respiratory therapy competency tests within specified timeline. New hires must complete competencies within 6 months. All staff must renew competencies annually. • Demonstrates accurate long term and short term goals for patients • Displays knowledge of and practices risk management and safety precautions. Accurate information is obtained upfront to ensure proper care and billing of patient for services. • Must be able to educate patients and family in the various pediatric respiratory equipment functions and operations. • Assists customers with inquiries and requests, determining appropriate items and providing demonstration and set-up as necessary. Performs other clinical respiratory therapy duties as assigned. • Must exhibit flexibility/adaptability in managing multifaceted requirements of respiratory therapist position and adjusts to changing, unusual or difficult situations. Handles stressful situations in a professional, appropriate manner. • Provides input/feedback/recommendations to providers or others in the interdisciplinary team. • Meets regularly with Lead respiratory therapist and Home Medical Equipment Manager to review previous visits, equipment malfunctions, patient infections, hospitalizations, documentation confirmation and patient issues. • Schedules visits with patient to follow policy and procedures of Children’s Home Healthcare. • Answers phone calls to troubleshoot durable medical equipment problems being experienced by patients during office and on-call hours. • Performs assessments in a compassionate manner. • Must be accountable, have good judgment and ability to function independently in the work environment. Documentation reflects accurate assessment/evaluation, modification, and patient’s response to therapy, changes in conditions, and therapeutic interventions/procedures. • All sections of visit sheet are completed correctly to reflect care since last visit. Documentation contains appropriate, company approved abbreviations written in a legible format. In accordance with agency time frames, submits written notes of each visit to home, containing pertinent information on treatment provided. • Work assignments and projects are completed in a thorough, accurate and timely manner. Analyzes and prioritizes workload and utilizes time effectively. • Completes accurate MD orders in access per policy. • Assists with active patient list and medical chart audits on a monthly basis. Assists with stopping all orders pertaining to respiratory in access at time of patient discharge. • Submits written summaries as applicable and/or upon discharge from service, evaluation of the patient’s status, response to treatments and teaching, progress or lack thereof, continued treatment plan, long and short term goals, visit frequency, and expected length of services. • Documents correct and exact dosages of medications reported by caregivers per policy • Dependable, arrives and begins work on time. Adheres to the attendance policy. Workspace is left clean, and organized. • Maintains ongoing communications with Lead Respiratory Therapist and Outpatient Respiratory Supervisor concerning patient’s status and any information, which may influence or change provision of services. • Has a “can do” attitude and responds positively to instructions. Develops, implements and evaluates individualized patient/family respiratory actions in accordance with the individualized patient/family plan of care and condition/needs of the patient. • Implements respiratory care in accordance with the plan of care and patient condition/needs with respect for individual cognitive, social, cultural and spiritual differences by incorporating child’s and/or caregivers preferences into care. Assesses patient’s health status to determine any pathology, which may negatively affect patient care, treatment and/or recovery. Ensures care plan accurately reflects the current plan of care. • Monitors and documents response to pain, cares, treatments and medications and evaluates outcomes of care provided, adjusting care process as indicated at each visit. • Evaluates home environment and supports systems to determine possible factors that may contribute to patient’s illness. Determines patient’s home equipment needs and necessary back-up equipment needs, if indicated. Routinely assesses all respiratory equipment to insure proper functioning and availability of emergency back-up equipment, if indicated. • Assesses/Evaluates patient/family understanding and compliance of treatment regimen and determines their ability to perform specific aspects of treatment plan as well as incorporate regime into daily routine. • Identifies education needs of patient/caregiver and provides ongoing education to patient and caregivers as needed. Identifies appropriate goals/outcomes and actions for clients (i.e. individualized, prioritized). Prepares/ implements patient/caregiver education per plan of care. Communicates education needs to patient/caregiver/staff at an understandable level and in a timely manner. • Attends clinical and department meetings 90% of the time. • Ensures respiratory equipment and supplies are ready for set-up prior to leaving for set-up. • Performs on-call duties on a rotational basis as schedule requires. Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job. Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section Education Qualifications Associate's Degree from an AMA accredited college or university in respiratory care Required Experience Qualifications Minimum 2 year experience in a hospital or home care setting as a Respiratory Therapist, preferably in a pediatric setting Required Skills and Abilities Must have the ability to communicate successfully both orally and in writing. Must also have effective listening skills. Requires the knowledge of clinical documentation protocols, home health care regulations and standards. Current clinical knowledge regarding specific treatment modalities, therapeutic applications, OSHA guidelines and drug therapy parameters. Must have the ability to plan and organize work schedule to include effectively setting priorities where necessary. Must exhibit excellent interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively with others. Must exhibit flexibility in managing the multifaceted requirements of position, and ability to function independently in home setting.
