Purpose of Position: To perform manual work involving installation, maintenance, and repair of water utility lines.
Essential Functions: (Must be able to perform these functions with or without a reasonable accommodation).
- Performs manual work associated with installation, maintenance, and repair of water utility lines; determines source of water leaks and makes necessary repairs; lays/installs water mains and service lines; repairs water mains, water service lines, and service leaks; installs water taps and irrigation taps; replaces water meters and meter washers; installs, raises, and repairs water valves; installs and repairs fire hydrants; locates underground utility mains/lines; replaces asphalt at work sites; installs bunkers; stacks bricks; cuts pipes; digs holes and shovels materials.
- Provides customer service; responds to questions or complaints involving water line breaks, potential leaks, high consumption, or other issues; investigates customer complaints and researches problems; initiates appropriate action to ensure problem resolution.
- Transports, hauls, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects or at work sites.
- Inspects equipment, refuels vehicles, checks fluid levels, replaces fluids, greases equipment, washes/cleans equipment, or cleans work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
- Follows established safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.
- Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, daily work reports, vehicle maintenance records, material sheets, valve maps, or other documents.
- Regular attendance is required as outlined in the company’s attendance policy.
- Must be able to operate a variety of equipment and tools associated with work activities, which may include a utility truck, dump truck, backhoe, tractor, utility locator, probe, leak detection equipment, tapping tool, water pump, generator, air compressor, jackhammer, chain saw, pipe saw, meters, gauges, mechanic tools, plumbing tools, hand tools, digging tools, measuring devices, or radio communications equipment.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively, work under pressure and to prioritize.
- Must be able to proficiently read, write and communicate clearly in English.
- Must be able to maintain a positive and professional attitude and an effective working relationship with, and among coworkers.
- Must be able to travel throughout the Baldwin County area regularly and out of town occasionally.
- Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Must possess effective communication skills with ability to handle difficult people or situations.
- Must be able to stand and walk around regularly, both inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather and on uneven terrain.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull objects and materials in excess of 50 lbs.
Assists to other employees or departments as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED; and
- Five (5) months previous experience and/or training involving water utility installation/repair, general maintenance work, and/or equipment operation a plus; or
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and be insurable.
- Must obtain a CDL license within 6 months of hire.
- Must pass a Drug Screen and criminal background check.
Working Conditions
Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, electric currents, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, or animal/insect bites.
