Bus Driver JD 8121
Job Description:
Operates a school bus daily, providing safe and efficient home-school transportation on established routes and schedules; transports students on program-related activities, according to specific itinerary and educational plans.
Reports to: Transportation Supervisor
Supervises: None
Essential Functions of the Position:
1. Drives school bus daily along established routes, home-to-school and school-to-home.
2. Transports students on field trips.
3. Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations.
4. Maintains student discipline on the bus.
5. Performs routine, daily safety checks of the bus and its equipment.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
1. Drives school bus daily on prescribed routes and on established schedules.
2. Drives school bus on field trips to various locations, holding to specified itinerary.
3. Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations pertinent to school bus operation.
4. Escorts students across streets and assists students on or off the bus, when necessary.
5. Transports only authorized students; checks for identification or passes under questionable circumstances.
6. Assists in supervision of boarding students.
7. Picks up/discharges student passengers only at authorized stops.
8. Maintains discipline on the bus; deals promptly, decisively and tactfully with unacceptable student behavior; submits timely, complete reports of improper student behavior.
9. Reports any and all accidents, in writing, to the Transportation Supervisor.
10. Submits mileage reports, trip records and time sheets to the Transportation Supervisor.
11. Conducts drills with students for safe and timely exit from the bus in emergency situations.
12. Collects, and return to the school office, personal items left on the bus by passengers.
13. Performs other related duties as required.
Education and Training:
Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be: high school diploma or equivalent and previous experience in driving a school bus.
Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:
Knowledge of:
• Provisions of the California Vehicle Code and the Education Code pertinent to operation of school vehicles in transportation of children.
• Standard safety practices.
• First Aid procedures.
Skill and Ability to:
• Deal promptly, decisively and tactfully with unacceptable student behavior on the bus.
• Exercise sound judgment under unexpected circumstances.
• Follow directions, oral and written.
• Safely operate a school bus.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possess a California driver's license, with a bus driver certificate. Pass the California Highway Patrol examination for bus drivers. Have a safe driving record.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
• Require vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.
• Require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend. Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
• Perform lifting, pushing and/or pulling which does not exceed 50 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the job.
• May be required to work around loud noise.
• May be required to work around moving mechanical parts. May be required to work around electrical current.
• Is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
• May be required to attend periodic evening meetings and/or to travel within and out of District boundaries to attend meetings.
• May be required to work evenings or weekends.
• Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position.

Requirements / Qualifications
Hold a valid California Driver's License drivers certificate.
(Special Bus Driver Certificate; Class B - CA license.)
Pass the California Highway Patrol examination for bus drivers.
