Education and Experience:
Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree from a CCNE-accredited institution; Licensure as a Registered Nurse; PA Certificate in School Nurse PK-12 (CSPG 80)
Minimum Experience: 1-3 years acute care or school nursing experience required

General Definition:
The Certified School Nurse (CSN) involves the science or art of the knowledge and competence required in addressing the health care needs of learners across grades PK-12. The Certified School Nurse (CSN) is qualified to provide information and services in school health-related areas; assess, document, and manage the health care needs of learners in grades PK-12, including those with disabilities; and recognize symptoms and consequences of safety and environmental factors.

Description of Duties:
  • Actively participates in Student Assistance Program (SAP) for any WIU-operated program
  • Acts as a health consultant to students and staff
  • Act as a liaison between K-12 schools and the Pennsylvania Department of Health to answer questions and support schools during COVID-19
  • Assess the condition and needs of all students who enter the health room during the day; maintains an accurate daily log of all students entering nursing office(s)
  • Reviews all health condition updates on students and enters pertinent health information into student information systems (e.g., PowerSchool, IEPWriter/STaR, and Grasp and Grow)
  • Attends workshops when applicable and with Board approval
  • Collects data, compiles reports, and completes School Health Annual Reimbursement Request System (SHARRS)
  • Completes incident reports for any injury requiring medical attention or causes of absence from school
  • Completes School Law Immunization Regulations Annual Report
  • Coordinate COVID-19 testing activities between participating schools, COVID-19 testing vendor, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health
  • Creates Individual Health Plans (IHP) as needed, based on health conditions
  • Determines the immunization status of all students according to the PA School Immunizations Regulations
  • Leads oversight for maintenance, service, and regularly troubleshooting of AED devices used for WIU classrooms and administrative offices
  • Maintains a student health record for every student
  • May provide health instruction upon request
  • Plans, schedules and assists with physical and dental examinations according to the PA School Health Code
  • Plans, schedules, and performs mandated services according to PA School Health Code
  • Promotes health education
  • Provides a healthy school environment
  • Provides care for injuries, acute illness, and long-term management of students with special care needs
  • Provides care for staffing according to licensure
  • Provides leadership for the provision of health services
  • Provides screenings and referrals for health conditions
  • Provides special medical treatments according to physician orders
  • Refers all students with medical concerns noted on screenings or examinations
  • Requisitions nursing supplies as needed
  • Secures proper forms and physician orders for the administration of prescription and nonprescription medication during facility hours
  • Serves as a leadership role for health policies and programs
  • Serves as a liaison between facility personnel, family, health care professionals, and the community.
  • Stores all student health records in a locked file cabinet
  • Stores medications in locked cabinets
  • Supports memberships of professional organizations
  • Utilizes community agencies when necessary
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Other:
Act 114 (Federal Criminal History), Act 34, Act 151 PA Child Abuse History Clearance, and Act 126 (Mandatory Reporter) clearances as well as valid PA driver's license.
Clearances must be current within 5 years from date of hire and a School Personnel Health Record current within 1 year from date of hire accompanied by Tuberculosis Test Result within 3 months of the date of hire.

Travel Requirements:
  • A minimal to moderate amount of travel is required for this position within Westmoreland County and throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
  • Must have reliable transportation
