Senior Custodian Job Description:

Distinguishing Features of the Class:

This is work involving the responsibility for the efficient and economical cleaning and maintenance of a school building. The work differs from the Head Custodian because of the size of building, the number of subordinates and the complexity of cleaning and maintenance activities. The maintenance activities are limited to minor repairs of facilities since journey level crafts persons are available to perform more complex electrical, painting, plumbing, carpentry, heating and ventilating work. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of School Facilities and Operations or Head Custodian. The incumbent plans, assigns and reviews the work of subordinate custodial and cleaning personnel. Does related work as required.

Typical work activities:
  • Oversees, schedules and assigns cleaning work of custodial staff
  • Distributes work orders for the building
  • Makes regular inspections of building and grounds to maintain proper cleaning and maintenance procedures
  • Recommends changes in procedures to custodial staff and administration
  • Participates in cleaning and maintenance activities
  • Controls temperature of buildings by turning boilers on and off and adjusting thermostat when necessary
  • Orders necessary supplies
  • Sees that buildings are locked and unlocked and in readiness for all activities
  • Maintains records and reports
  • Clears snow from walkways, driveways, and parking lot
  • May inspect and oversee work performed by outside contractors
Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

Good knowledge of modern building cleaning practices, procedures, equipment and supplies; good knowledge of the physical layout of the building when assigned; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the low pressure heating plant; skill in the use of cleaning equipment and tools; skill in the use of tools needed for simple repairs, such as hammers, wrenches, saws, screwdrivers, drills, etc; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to follow oral and written directions; physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.
