Seasonal Sleep Away Camp Director

Position Summary:
This position works with the Director of Outdoor Program to assist with recruiting and make hiring recommendations for camp staff. The Sleep Away Camp Director will work part time (up to 8 hours per week) through May 31st, 2025. The salary for this position will increase beginning June 1, 2025, when full-time seasonal employment begins.
The Sleep Away Camp Director will maintain pre-camp communications with camp staff and in cooperation with the Director of Outdoor Program, is responsible for planning the camp program and preparing for pre-camp training. As a Camp Director, you have the opportunity to create a high-quality camping experience that is girl-driven and girl-focused. You will work as a leader in the camp community to create a culture of empowerment and enthusiasm for all campers. You will ensure that all activities adhere to quality and safety standards, address the needs and interests of members, are consistent with the Girl Scout Mission, and are equally accessible to all girls served by Girl Scouts of Connecticut.
Major Accountabilities:
Staff Supervision & Leadership:
- Manage, train, and evaluate camp staff, including key roles like Assistant Camp Director and Program Director.
- Ensure staff follow policies and deliver high-quality programs.
Recruitment & Hiring:
- Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring camp staff, completing HR paperwork and managing recruitment events.
- Plan, develop, and oversee camp programs to meet the needs of Girl Scouts and target populations.
- Ensure camp operations comply with state laws, Girl Scouts policies, and ACA standards.
Camp Operations & Programming:
Training & Development:
- Work with the Director of Outdoor Program to develop pre-camp training and provide ongoing staff development.
- Maintain safety standards, conduct emergency drills, and communicate with parents about camper issues.
- Oversee camp budgets and expenses, ensuring accurate financial records and reconciliations.
- Develop camp schedules, assign staff, and ensure a diverse and inclusive environment for campers.
- Assist with camp setup, maintenance, and post-season evaluations.
- Ensure compliance with state licensing and ACA standards; submit required reports and incident documentation.
- Maintain open communication with staff, camp leadership, and parents. Participate in regular meetings and camp promotion events.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure smooth camp operations.
Health & Safety:
- Maintain safety standards, conduct emergency drills, and communicate with parents about camper issues.
Financial Management:
- Oversee camp budgets and expenses, ensuring accurate financial records and reconciliations.
Scheduling & Staffing:
- Develop camp schedules, assign staff, and ensure a diverse and inclusive environment for campers.
Camp Opening & Closing:
- Assist with camp setup, maintenance, and post-season evaluations.
Compliance & Reporting:
- Ensure compliance with state licensing and ACA standards; submit required reports and incident documentation.
Communication & Collaboration:
- Maintain open communication with staff, camp leadership, and parents. Participate in regular meetings and camp promotion events.
Additional Duties:
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure smooth camp operations.
Skills and Competencies:
- Must be 21 years or older.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2 seasons of summer camp experience.
- Strong commitment to the Girl Scout approach to outdoor education and experiential learning.
- Proven leadership abilities and experience managing children and staff.
- Willingness to follow Girl Scouts of Connecticut policies and practices.
- Ability to qualify as a Youth Camp Director in Connecticut.
- First Aid/CPR/AED and Medication Administration Certification required upon hire.
- Strong judgment, decision-making, and crisis management skills.
- Excellent written communication with strong grammar and clarity.
- Energetic, enthusiastic, and a positive role model.
- Proficient in computer software, word processing, and database management.
- Skilled in addressing and resolving conflicts in a constructive and professional manner.
- Strong ability to provide ongoing training, feedback, and professional development opportunities to staff.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Ability to effectively communicate.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities and camper and staff behavior.
- Ability to provide first aid and to assist campers and staff in an emergency with a clear and level head.
