Purpose

Contributes to the overall success of the Global Human Resources Technology / Solution Architecture & Engineering Globally ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

Accountabilities
  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Develop and unit test applications in accordance with established standards.
  • Apply best development and design practices and participate in peer reviews of solution designs and related code.
  • Work with teammates to migrate older applications to current Microsoft technologies or to Java-based technologies.
  • Develop, refine, and tune continuous integrations between applications.
  • Analyze and resolve technical and application defects with excellent troubleshooting and debugging skills.
  • Assess opportunities for application and process improvement and prepare documentation of rationale to share with team members and other affected parties.
  • Adhere to high-quality development principles while delivering solutions on time.
  • Provide third-level support to business users.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Dimensions

The software developer will focus on application development and support in a Java-based development environment. You will be part of a collaborative team that includes Technical Lead, Software Developers, Business Analysts, and Quality Assurance engineers. You will be involved in the full development life cycle, from design and development to testing and deployment of various web-based Global HR applications. To be successful in this role, you should have strong programming skills and knowledge of web development frameworks to deliver high quality solutions for our clients.

Education / Experience / Other Information (include only those that are specific to the role)
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering (must)
  • 2-3+ years of experience as a software developer (must)
  • Extensive experience in object-oriented software design and development (must)
  • Proficient with Java technologies, including but not limited to C#, Web Services, supporting frameworks, and UI tools (nice to have)
  • Experience with unit testing frameworks (nice to have)
  • Strong experience in Microsoft SQL Server, database design and development; experience with data migration tools is considered a strong asset.
  • Understanding of cloud-hosted environments like Azure / GCP is considered a strong asset.
  • Comprehensive understanding of object-oriented application development techniques and theories.
  • Knowledge of service-oriented architecture and relational databases, including database theory, and a strong understanding of business data structures
