Duke University was created in 1924 through an indenture of trust by James Buchanan Duke. Today, Duke is regarded as one of America's leading research universities. Located in Durham, North Carolina, Duke is positioned in the heart of the Research Triangle, which is ranked annually as one of the best places in the country to work and live. Occupational Summary
The John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute (FHI) at Duke University promotes research, education and public engagement in the humanities. This position will play a vital role in explaining the value of the humanities in interpreting the human experience, making sense of our world and enriching our lives, and to making the FHI's work broadly accessible to public and campus audiences.
Reporting to the director of communications for interdisciplinary studies and faculty advancement, in consultation with the director and associate director of the FHI, this position has principal responsibility for planning and implementing strategic communications in support of the FHI that align with and amplify the university's strategic priorities. Working closely with the FHI's staff, the person holding this role will create and manage content about the institute's people, activities and programs, including faculty research as well as student- and community-facing programs. (Note that event publicity will be the responsibility of the FHI program coordinator.)
This role requires the ability to translate research into effective communications for wider campus and public audiences, articulating the value of the humanities in addressing some of the world's most pressing problems and increasing understanding of what the FHI does and why it matters.
This team member will help identify humanities scholarship research of interest to the campus community, media and the public, explain complex concepts in accessible and compelling terms, tell the stories and develop the best strategy for amplification. If you are interested in joining our team, please complete the application process via the Duke Careers website and include a cover letter with your resume.
Hybrid work arrangements are negotiable.
