Job Description

The practice of nursing requires specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide care to groups and individuals. The RN utilizes knowledge derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. All care is provided based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCH which promotes an on-going partnership between patients and families and the team of healthcare providers. The care is culturally based and age specific. The RN adheres to American Nursing Association (ANA) code of ethics and to the scope of practice described in the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.

The Postpartum unit is responsible for the post-delivery care of mothers and their infants, low risk antepartum and clean gyn surgeries. Staff on this unit assist with breastfeeding and education while monitoring the healing and recuperation of new mothers. Staff on this unit are also responsible for maintaining the health of the mother and baby while monitoring any complications that arise during the postpartum period and ensure that mothers have a smooth transition from hospital to home.

Responsibilities

The Lactation RN is a self-directed, professional registered nurse with advanced knowledge and expertise specific to his/her clinical area. The lactation RN serves as a mentor, instructor, and expert in lactation care. The lactation role is developed in relationship to responsibilities and specialty population of practice. The lactation RN will be department based and may have additional responsibilities as patient population warrants on other clinical floors as well as in the outpatient setting.

Qualifications

CLC or IBCLC required. If CLC, must obtain IBCLC withing 2 years of hire date.

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred.
  • The Christ Hospital Health Network does hire AD and Diploma nurses, however.
  • All nurses hired after January 2010 must obtain their BSN within 5 years of the date of hire.
  • An MSN or DNP are not required but supersede the requirement for the BSN.

Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of applicable clinical nursing experience working with childbearing families.

Required Skills and Knowledge: Excellent communication and teaching skills required. Actively seeks opportunities in area of expertise and/or in education to improve own knowledge. Regular attendance in continuing education programs.

License and Certifications: The RN holds a current licensure to practice nursing in her/his state of employment. Certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC) upon hire or within one year of hire. Minimum of CLC certification required. BLS required. NRP required. Membership in professional organizations desirable.
