Systems Engineer

Must be a US Citizen or Green Card Holder (Requires CUI and Trade Compliance Access) Candidates will need to work from the Salt Lake office a majority of the time - remote/hybrid work will be based on current projects and up to the manager's discretion This is NOT an IT Systems/Network Engineer; looking for someone that has an electrical related background (ex: someone that started as an electrical engineer and then moved into a systems engineer role; if they have only done mechanical engineering, that is not a fit) Potential to extend/convert 1-2 rounds of interviews via Teams (or in person if the candidate prefers) Position Summary Thales Navigation And non-radar Surveillance (NAS) business segment, part of the Thales Land and Air Systems Global Business Unit, architects solutions used by two-thirds of all planes worldwide to take off and land safely. Our Ground Navigation portfolio offers a complete range of products, which includes the latest generation of ground-based navigational aids (NAVAIDs) (e.g. ILS, DME, TACAN, VOR) and non-radar surveillance (e.g. ADS-B). With more than 7,000 NAVAIDs and non-radar surveillance installed worldwide in 172 countries, we are world leaders in the NAVAIDs market. In this role, the Systems Engineer will be involved in all stages of product lifecycle from initial capture of customer requirements through development and finally, deployment to the customer. The Systems Engineer acts as the lead technical interface with the Customer in regards to the solution architecture, performance, deployment on customer sites and issues raised during the project phase. In this role, the systems engineer holds ownership of the technical needs to the project(s) they support. The systems engineer will have knowledge in electrical hardware design (preferably within the domain of Radio Frequency [RF] signal electronics and antennas). As part of Integration Verification Validation & Qualification (IVVQ), the Systems Engineer will have had experience developing, authoring, planning, and executing test requirements, success criteria, and use case analysis to develop test cases. We are currently looking for a Systems Engineer to join Thales Airspace Mobility Solutions (AMS) US located in Salt Lake City, UT, USA. This Systems Engineer will also produce and maintain NAVAID product System Specifications, when applicable. Additionally they will be responsible for analyzing the System/Subsystem Specification (SSS) requirements to determine required modifications to the hardware and software. The Systems Engineer analyzes new situations, formulates new ideas; and generates requirements with sufficient detail to start a new design and solve complex problems. The Systems Engineer applies knowledge of hardware, software and network technologies to generate highly innovative, cost effective, system-level design solutions. The Systems Engineer executes and enhances System Engineering efforts and processes with regard to development and sustaining projects. In addition, other activities include, supporting the allocation of system requirements to the subsystems, budgeting performance requirements to subsystems, and estimating the effort required to implement those modifications. The Systems Engineer will be responsible to support effort estimation and Statement Of Work (SOW) development with further responsibility to serve as the subcontract technical manager for sub-tier supplier co-development programs as they arise. While performing these tasks they are responsible for meeting cost, delivery and performance targets. The Systems Engineer will help to define the design details including CONcept of OPerations (CONOPs), Requirements, System Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and design review details; clearly highlighting the new developments (scope, key technical aspects and development challenges with quantified risks) from the existing components of the Thales NAVAID integrated software and hardware products. The position is an execution and delivery focused position in the context of the project. The Systems Engineer works closely with Software, Hardware, Test and other systems engineers to ensure timely delivery of quality products. The Systems Engineer will report directly to the local Engineering Manager of the Thales NAS business segment. Essential Functions / Key Areas of Responsibility • Development or Maintenance of specification, design, implementation, integration, and testing of NAVAID products • Prepares schedule estimates based on proposed solutions • Supports configuration management activities for design qualification testing • Utilizes a problem reporting tool to document product issues • Participates in peer reviews of system requirements • Participates in integration of software and hardware • Creates, defines, analyses, integrates and maintains overall System requirements including Hardware (HW) and Software (SW) Analysis and Definition for the particular Competency Center • Creates, defines, analyses, test success criteria, use case analysis, test case definition, author test procedures, conduct integration, verification and qualification tests, record test results and author test reports • Contributes to System level integration in terms of requirements knowledge and expectations, planning, and execution of hardware and software integration • Assists Product Management with Product Requirements Document (PRD), including integration of Customer-specific requirements and Concept of Operations (CONOPS) generation and maintenance • Contributes to Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) Estimates and Supports proposals, customer presentations, and New Product Design • Provides regular status reports to the project manager and/or project leader • Acts as technical Point-Of-Contact (POC) for Thales customers Minimum Requirements: • Bachelor's Degree in Systems, Electrical or Software Engineering, or another technical field with a minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience or a Master's degree in Systems, Electrical or Software Engineering, or another technical field with 4+ years of relevant experience Software and/or Electrical development design experience • Proficient in the use of issue tracking software (e.g. Jira) • Proficient in the use of requirement management tools (e.g. DOORS) • Self-motivated, critical thinker with strong curiosity to learn • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills • Experience with interfacing directly with end customers • Ability to read and update schematics • Must be self-starter and motivated to work in a fast-paced environment • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel Preferred Qualifications • Extensive experience and built knowledge in electrical hardware design (specifically within the domain of Radio Frequency [RF] signal electronics and antennas) including in hardware, firmware and software Integration, Validation, Verification and Qualification (IVVQ) test environments. • Ability to speak additional languages such as Spanish, Italian, French, or German is a benefit • Master's Degree in Systems, Electrical or Software Engineering, or another technical field • Some mechanical knowledge, AutoCAD • Experience with Thales tools and processes • Experience with DOD and/or FAA Programs Travel: Anticipated to be less than 25% annually. Trips can be both domestic and international travel and less than 5 days in length, with international trips up to 7 days in length.
