Position Summary:

The ASL Language Lab Assistant willprovide ASL instructional support to UNC students enrolledin ASL I-VI campus-based and online coursework. The ASL Language Lab Assistant will facilitate individual and small group interactions to supplementand strengthen the language units taught in the courses.

This is a semester-long, part-time assignment that hasthe potential for renewal each semester, including fall, spring and summersemesters.

Job Duties:

The ASL Language Lab Assistant must be a native/near-native ASL user who is a member ofthe Deaf Community, to accurately model ASL, identify the student'slanguage challenges, and implement successful language learning interventions.In addition, the ASL Language Lab Assistant needs outstanding soft skillsto meet a variety of students where they are emotionally and academicallyacross three years of ASL coursework at UNC.

The ASL Language Lab Assistant will work independently and therefore will need to exercise criticalthinking and judgement in all their interactions. As a member of theDepartment, the ASL Language Lab Assistant will need to be familiar withfederal laws (e.g., FERPA) and UNC policies (e.g., technology users'policy), as well as some of the external regulatory bodies that influencethe ASLIS philosophy and course design (e.g., American Council onTeaching Foreign Language, Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education).

Finally,the ASL Language Lab Assistant will work with technology in the lab andat a distance and need familiarity with these media.

Minimum Qualifications:

1.Native/near-native ASL proficiency
2. Membership in the Deaf Community
3. Exemplary people skills
4. Competence with technologies, in the lab and delivered to distance students

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experienceteaching ASL
2. Experience mentoring/tutoring students who are learning ASL
