JOB TITLE: SUBSTITUTE CUSTODIAN

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds/Principal

NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:
Performs custodial tasks to provide students and district with a safe, attractive, clean environment in which to learn, develop and play. Assist in maintaining the efficient operation of the school buildings.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possess the ability to read and write at an 8th grade level
2. Complete Federal Form 1-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
3. Valid driver's license kept on file
4. Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted in accordance with 18A:6-7.1
5. Able to lift and move objects of up to 50 pounds unassisted
6. Speak proper English and properly communicate.
7. Provide proof of good moral character.
8. Maintain ethical and professional behavior relating to students, parents, community, administration, teaching staff members and support staff members.
9. Exhibit a personality compatible with working with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
10. Prove that health is adequate to fulfill job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with NJ.A.C. 6:29-7.4.
11. Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C, 6:29-2.3.
12. Demonstrate minimum proficiency in custodial and minor maintenance work: See Job Functions and Performance Responsibilities
13. Adheres to New Jersey school law, State Board of Education rules and regulations, local Board of Education policies and regulations, and contractual obligations
14. Demonstrate minimum proficiency in:
A. Painting -
B. Plaster and Spackling - prepping walls prior to painting
C. Field and Playground repairs, maintenance and inspections
D. Floor Care - strip, wax, sand and buff
E. Furniture - repair, move
F. Outdoor grounds work including snow/ice removal

JOB FUNCTIONS AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: CUSTODIAN
  1. Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean, at all times.
  2. Shovels, plows, and/or sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate. Keeps doorways clean of leaves and debris both inside and outside.
  3. Raises the United States flag each school day and lowers it at the end of the day.
  4. Sweeps school facilities daily and dusts furniture.
  5. Cleans corridors and stairwells school each day, and during the day, when their condition requires it. Scrub and waxing of floors.
  6. Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilets, lavatory floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountain daily.
  7. Reports immediately to the principal and Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds, any damage to school property.
  8. Remains on the school premises during assigned hours, and during non-school hours, when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required by the principal.
  9. Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  10. Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such need replacements from the principal far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his/her duties..

  14. Receives and unloads supplies and other deliveries and moves them to designated areas.
  15. Moves furniture, supplies, packages, or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
  16. Washes windows at entrances and in classrooms cleans windows, blinds, and shades.
    17. Performs minor maintenance functions; notify Supervisor when a task requires maintenance assistance; inspect/replace light bulbs and ceiling tiles in assigned area.
  17. Attends required staff meetings and required trainings, and monthly drills.
  18. Maintains knowledge of current developments, current interpretations in the field and current methodology of field in which assigned.
  19. Operate equipment and electronics, as determined by supervisor, needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities safely and appropriately.
    Maintain assigned custodial equipment so it is ready for use next time.
  20. Protects confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and uses discretion in sharing such information within legal confines
  21. Performs other duties as assigned by Administrator and/or Supervisor, not otherwise prohibited by law. Assist in all daily building activities.
  22. Performs maintenance tasks in the various trade skills (as defined in qualifications) as assigned by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds. Assist maintenance and ground staff as needed.
  23. Assures a work order has been issued prior to performing any task other than emergencies and keeps a log of all maintenance functions performed in the School Dude system.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  1. Possess enough strength to lift weight as much as 50 pounds and be able to move it as far as 50 feet at a time.
  2. Possess stamina to remain on their feet for periods as long as two full hours without discomfort.
  3. Possess stamina to remain seated for periods as long as two hours without discomfort.
  4. Possess visual acuity and stamina to work at a computer monitor for up to half of each workday.
  5. Possess the ability to orally communicate with students in proper English.
  6. Possess ability to climb a ladder to the height necessary to perform duty.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
  1. Exposure to cleaning agents.
  2. Exposure to solvents.
  3. Exposure to pesticides.
  4. Exposure to exhaust fumes.
  5. Exposure to various conditions existing on the grounds or in the building

VERIFICATION OF COMPENTENCY:

EMPLOYMENT TERMS:
The Custodian shall be employed under the following terms:
  1. Work is on an as-needed basis only
  2. Salary or hourly wage as specified in the Greenwich Township Board of Education policies/regulations and the Collective Bargaining Agreement, if applicable.
