GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) who has completed an advanced
education program approved by the TBNE (Texas Board of nurse Examiners), who
manages the healthcare needs of newborns, infants, and their families. The APP diagnoses and treats in collaboration with neonatologists and other pediatric physicians. The APP makes independent and interdependent decisions in the assessment, diagnosis, management, and evaluation of the health care needs of neonates and infants in addition, the APP selects and performs clinically indicated basic interventions and therapeutic invasive procedures. The APP operates within the parameters of Driscoll Children's Hospital Mission Statement and Core Values.

  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to
  • corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Assess, diagnose, monitor, promote health and protection from disease. Management
  • of neonatal patients (Level 1-2) presenting with stable complex and/or chronic
  • problems.
  • Provides treatment of comm on and more complicated neonate illnesses, injuries, or
  • conditions in patients with low risk to life.
  • Accepts and coordinates total care for a specific caseload of neonatal patients.
  • Obtains health history both maternal and infant for all patients in the NNP's caseload.
  • Performs daily physical assessments and examinations.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic/laboratory studies.
  • Diagnoses and treats neonatal disease processes.
  • After concurrence with attending neonatologist makes referral to specialty physicians
  • as appropriate.
  • Documents daily on APP data form, the daily diagnosis, changes, and updates in plan
  • of care.
  • Prescribes and manages medication, fluid, respiratory, nutrition and other therapies.
  • Prescribes specialty therapy consults as appropriate, i.e., PT, OT, hearing, speech, etc.
  • Maintains therapeutic relationships with parents/families through counseling and
  • teaching about their infant's condition.
  • Facilitate continuum of care through close coordination with the neonatologist, case
  • manager, bedside nurse, specialty MD/Services, family, and community services.
  • Participate in service conferences and committees.
  • Collaborate with research personnel on research projects and data collection.
  • Refer to the delineation of privileges APP FNP/PNP NICU DOP for additional elements
  • of the APPs role and scope.
  • Flexible scheduling, required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
• Master's or Post Master's Degree, Required.
• Graduation from a Nurse Practitioners Program with practice authority in the
State of Texas, Required.
• 1-2 years of neonatal/pediatric experience in direct patient care, including
involvement in teaching and staff guidance, preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION
• • Family Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified (FNP-BC)
• • Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Primary Care (CPNP-PC)
• • Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Acute Care (CPNP-AC)
• Active and unencumbered nurse practitioner and registered nurse license in
the State of Texas, required.
• Advanced specialty courses and ongoing education requirements as required
by DCH.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, required.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification, required.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, required for NICU
(Alameda) level 4 APPs.
• DCH Credentialing obtained within time frame required and continuously
maintained ongoing.
• Must obtain DCH credentialing as an active member of medical staff and
appropriate medical privileges, required
