JOB SUMMARY:

Prepares, stores and serves a variety of foods for hospital customers and special functions.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepares, sets up and serves hot and cold food items needed for customer meal services.

Preforms basic cooking duties.

Cleans and sanitizes work area, equipment, and dishes.

Maintains and sets up work area; restocking all items as needed

Perform cash register duties.

Assists with other duties as assigned

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Ability to recognize food items which are unsuitable for service. Ability to safely utilize commercial cooking and preparation equipment. Understand and apply basic sanitation and storage principles. Required to read, write and understand verbal and written instructions. Possess a pleasant, respectful and enthusiastic manner toward others.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is moderate to heavy: exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally; 10 - 20 pounds of force routinely to move and transfer objects. Stands and walks short distances most of the day. Requires bending, lifting, carrying and pushing. Manual dexterity and motor coordination to handle utensils and dishes.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work in an environment with temperature variations from cold to hot and humid. Works with chemicals

that are potentially harmful if proper precautions are not used.

REASONING, MATHEMATICAL AND LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT:

Apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions. Deal with standardized situations with occasional or no variables in or from the situations encountered on the job.

Add and subtract two digit numbers. Perform the four basic arithmetic operations with coins and as part of a dollar. Perform operations with units such as cup, pint, and quart; or ounce and pound. Perform arithmetic operations involving American monetary units.

Read and understand instructions, safety rules, etc. Speak clearly and distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis, correct pronunciation, variations in word order, using present, perfect, and future tenses.

RELATIONSHIPS TO DATA, PEOPLE AND THINGS:

Determining time, place, and sequence of operations or action to be taken on the basis of analysis of data; executing determination of and/or reporting on events.

Attending to the needs, requests or the expressed or implicit wishes of people. Immediate response is involved. .

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school graduate or equivalent preferred.

Experience: Prior experience in food service required.

Must be 18 years of age.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supports the mission of the Department which is to provide comprehensive nutrition care to our customers throughout the organization and community. This will be accomplished by providing quality food services, assessment and evaluation of needs, provision of appropriate nutritional therapy and education which supports Day Kimball Hospital's goals.

Prepares a variety of hot and cold foods for service to customers. May perform some basic hot food preparation, i.e. grill cook/baking, etc.

May prepare nourishments and supplements for meals and snacks, i.e. shakes, modified food items, etc.

May prepare cold food items and condiments for trayline service, cafeteria and cafe in an attractive manner using fresh garnishes and dressings. Measures and mixes ingredients according to recipes using a variety of kitchen utensils and equipment including blenders, mixers, grinders, slicers, steamers, ovens, broilers, etc

May assist in trayline duties preparing, delivering and retrieving trays.

Maintains and sets up work area and equipment in a neat, clean, sanitary and orderly manner. Assures sufficient stock/quantities are picked up from storage areas.

May operate cash register; collects cash, guest tickets, records patron information as needed and makes change accurately.

Fosters good public image through own conduct with employees, patients and visitors.

Serves food items to customers in an efficient, professional manner.

Maintains proper temperatures for both hot and cold foods. Obtains and stores food items needed from storage area, adhering to proper storage techniques.

Adheres to proper portion control of all food items prepared and served to ensure nutritional adequacy.

May prepare, set up, deliver and return functions as required.

Adheres to all regulations for sanitation and safety. Performs variety of sanitation tasks including dishwashing, equipment cleaning, work area, tables, etc.

May assist in opening through closing procedures as assigned.

Must be able to maintain confidentiality in a professional manner.

Demonstrates competency in utilizing resources to accommodate cultural needs of patients and customers such as dietary, religious and language needs.

Demonstrates efforts to maintain and improve job specific competencies. Incorporates new knowledge into practice.

Participates in performance improvement activities.

Participates in problem solving.

Remains flexible in work schedule in order to provide the most effective and efficient support for the department and hospital mission.

Demonstrates the ability to follow appropriate procedures/production techniques related to the care of patients from 5 months to 105 years.

Demonstrates the ability to communicate and interact with patients and customers of all ages.

Demonstrates knowledge of all department and hospital policies relevant to the performance of their responsibilities.

Demonstrates knowledge and application of principles of fire safety, infection control, hazardous communication program, standard precautions and general safety.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Although position has no responsibility for the assessment, treatment or care of patients, demonstrates ability to communicate and interact with patients and customers of all ages.
