POSITION PURPOSE:

Performs complex level work in maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting boiler systems located within a Wake County Public School System facility. Provides technical specialist experience in the monitoring of construction and installation of new and replacement boilers at schools. Provides technical guidance and assistance to less skilled employees and assists in the training of employees. Ensures boilers are performing at their optimal efficiency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
  • Extensive knowledge in servicing various boiler models;
  • Considerable knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel; Google Apps;
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team and complete tasks in the absence of clear direction;
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations;
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform maintenance and repairs on HVAC systems;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, contractors, vendors, and external agencies.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Ten years of experience directly related to boilers and associated systems installation and repair;
  • Experience in servicing boilers and boiler systems, including software updates;
  • Experience with multiple boiler manufacturers.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Hold a valid HVAC and Refrigeration License determined by the North Carolina Board of HVAC Examiners; or hold an HVAC technicians license determined by the North Carolina Board of HVAC Examiners;
  • Factory certification in one or more major boiler manufacturers;
  • Within twelve months of employment complete safety training according to OSHA standards;
  • Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license according to the State of NC requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate's degree or technical school training in HVAC Systems.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Performs complex level work in maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting boiler systems within Wake County Public School System (WCPSS).
  2. Provides technical specialist experience in the monitoring of construction and installation of new and replacement boilers at all school facilities.
  3. Provides technical guidance and assistance to less skilled employees and assists in the training of employees.
  4. Ensures boilers are performing at their optimal efficiency.
  5. Responds to assigned work orders relating to boilers; troubleshoots and ensures that the appropriate corrective measures are performed to provide a solution.
  6. Replaces faulty or defective boiler equipment and systems.
  7. Prepares and maintains records, work logs, and reports, as needed.
  8. Adheres to laws, regulations, and requirements set forth in the WCPSS safety procedures/policies.
  9. Maintains compliance and adherence to all safety procedures, occupational health practices, and maintaining a safe work environment.
  10. Performs other related duties, as assigned.


WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position operates in an indoor and outdoor environment. This role routinely use a variety of equipment such as computers, hand/power tools, etc. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, contractors, vendors, external agencies. Work is considered heavy physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 75 pounds of force. The work requires the ability to operate automotive equipment. Frequent exposure to hazardous materials, gases, and chemicals, moving parts, and inclement weather conditions.
