JOB TITLE: REGISTERED NURSE COORDINATOR
JOB CLASS: PROFESSIONAL

JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership in the development and coordination of care delivered through Student Health Services, as well as assisting the director in the clinical and administrative operations of the clinic. The Registered Nurse Coordinator works collaboratively with staff, students and faculty to respond to the needs of a culturally diverse student body. The Registered Nurse Coordinator will provide students with the information and resources they need to establish physical health care in the Western New York Community when needed and will maintain strong working relationships with providers to ensure a complete and up-to-date referral network.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Plan and perform basic nursing workups and assessments including but not limited to: Triage, vital signs, venipuncture, finger sticks, immunizations and other injections, preparations of lab specimens, vision and hearing screening, throat cultures, pregnancy tests, ear lavage. Assists provider with procedures and examinations when needed.
- Coordinate lab tests: prepare specimens, send to lab; screen results, route to provider, follow up with student, file in chart, and coordinate care when needed per orders.
- Dispense medications to patients under provider's direction/orders.
- Provides health education to promote disease prevention and well-being.
- Maintains current documentation, records observations, progress notes, and nurse's notes in EHR.
- Assist with set up and general maintenance of exam rooms, lab areas, and nurse's work area.
- Coordinates referrals for clinically indicated services outside of the Niagara University Health Services office.
- Assists students in identifying and resolving any logistical or financial barriers to completing a referral.
- Acts as the point of contact for students, families and providers who raise questions or concerns about the referral process.
- Documents care coordination encounters per established procedures.
- Communicates with collateral parties when appropriate and with student's consent, such as parents, faculty, and administrators.
- Assists with complex, problematic situations, including crisis consultations and hospitalizations. Provide first aid and other stabilizing emergency care if needed.
- Identify the student's preferred method of receiving health information.
- Use MD standing orders when applicable.
- Maintain relationships with associate Student Health colleagues
- Considered Essential Personnel whose physical presence is required on campus and must be prepared to address those functions remotely as needed when operations are restricted, or the campus is closed.
- Understand and comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030)

65% Assesses complaints of illnesses using nursing assessment skills and treats the patient as necessary; (assists in allergy clinic), follows up with lab and x-ray results, initiates treatments per provider's orders, handles referrals and phone contacts.
20% Implements appropriate case disposition to internal or external services, based on student needs and resources and clinic capacity.
10% Assessment of health indicators, risk factors for academic success; identification of health promotion and student's preferred method of receiving information.
5% Collaborate with students, staff, university resources, faculty, and community agencies.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of college health issues, risk behaviors of young adults affecting academic success and public health issues.
- Knowledge of up-to-date clinical policies and procedures as well as discusses situations when questions about clinical or operations issues emerge.
- Knowledge of developmental trends and health concerns of undergraduate and graduate students.
- Knowledge and skill in interpreting research and applying research into practice.
- Knowledge of NYS Immunization laws, regulations, and documentation.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, faculty and community agencies.
- Proficient with computer skills including word processing and internet research: strong organizational skills.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to read, comprehend and communicate clearly and understandably in the English language.
- Proficiency to handle various office machines including but not limited to: computer keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, copy machine and fax.
- Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone.
- Ability to work flexible hours days during the week and occasional weekends (for special campus events when available). Scheduling of hours is adjusted seasonally.
The functions of the position involve sitting and standing. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting more than 50 pounds, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, cutting, labeling, and taping involve extensive wrist and hand movement. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
- New York State Licensed Registered Professional Nurse. Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Knowledge of NYS Immunization laws; OSHA, DEC, and Nursing Laws.
- Candidates should be flexible to work occasional weekend hours as necessary.
