Mental Health Counselor (MHC) - Partial Hospital Program

The Mental Health Counselor (MHC) in the Italian Home for Children Partial Hospital Program is passionate about the wellbeing of youth age 4-13 who are in crisis and wants to make a difference in the lives of youth. The youth served are experiencing mental health and behavioral challenges that require a break from their education for about 1-4 weeks while they receive day treatment and care to stabilize and return to their home and school. The MHC is a member of the treatment team and an important voice in the care of the youth served. The MHC maintains a safe and therapeutic milieu, receiving guidance from the masters level therapist, the treatment plan, and management. This position requires skill in building rapport with youth, engaging youth in therapeutic activities and groups, communicating observations to the clinical team, deescalating youth in crisis, and collaborating with others. The MHC facilitates or co-facilitate mental health treatment groups (training provided). The MHC will participate in treatment team planning and will facilitate the coordination of care with the patient in conjunction with the primary therapist and other participating team members. With training, the MHC develops the skills and tools necessary to provide youth with the best possible care. Counselors model care, empathy, and patience for children and families and are committed to providing the highest quality of care. The MHC reports to the Clinical Supervisor. This position is Monday through Friday days and part time and full time are available.

At the Italian Childrens Home, all care is trauma-informed and evidence-based treatment is essential. All treatment approaches are person-centered, individualized, safe, and respectful. Support, hope, and recovery are emphasized in all treatment approaches. Our approach offers clients the opportunity to learn new life skills and to replace maladaptive behaviors with more appropriate and socially acceptable strategies.

Essential Functions

  • Accompany youth through admission process and orients youth to the program
  • Implement counselor activities identified in treatment plan
  • Maintain eyesight and supervision of clients at all times
  • Engage with and fully attend to children, monitoring behavior and interactions closely
  • Contribute to treatment team meetings, rounds, and discussions about youth progress; contribute to understanding/interventions for effective outcomes
  • Facilitate/co-facilitate group therapy daily and plan activities/topics; maintain a consistent and predictable schedule and structure
  • Track clinical data and provide summaries to clinical team
  • Prompt, assist with, or facilitate youth's self-management of Activities of Daily Living
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment as evidenced by consistently observing youth for changes in mental status and changes in safety/behavior and participating in de-escalation of youth
  • Maintain a clean, professional, and safe environment free of dangerous objects, spills, disorganization; take pride in the appearance of the program
  • Pursue ongoing learning through in-services, courses, and/or reading in order to better understand and meet needs of youth
  • Prepare for and appropriately utilize dedicated time with supervisor
  • Attend staff meetings for clarification on policies, procedures, changed in programming, scheduling, and more
  • Maintain strong professional boundaries
  • Adhere to policies around confidentiality and HIPPA guidelines
  • Participate in discharge planning and attend discharge meeting
  • Document observations of youth participation in program/treatment/groups, observed response to interventions, behavior, and concerns/progress
Essential Qualifications
  • High School diploma required; Bachelors degree in Human Services field preferred
  • 1-2 years previous experience working with children and adolescents
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite/Office 365; advanced skills in Excel preferred
  • Ability to take initiative and work autonomously
  • Excellent verbal and written communication\
  • Thorough understanding and strict commitment to agency, employee, and client privacy; Adherence to all HIPPA guidelines and regulations
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records preferred
  • Effective interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Strong commitment to Italian Home for Children's mission, philosophy, and values
  • Physical ability to run, climb stairs, bend, lift up to 75 pounds
