Production Painter Summary: The Production Painter is responsible for applying high quality paint finishes to fire truck cabs, body panels, ladders, etc. utilizing a variety of spray equipment. Knowledge of the entire body finishing process is essential including metal prep, primers, basecoats, clearcoats and buffing. Reliability and self-motivation with a keen eye for detail is essential in this job, and significant work experience and solid technical knowledge is required. Every behavior and decision should be made to promote and protect the HME culture, and it is important to interact positively with internal and external customers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operates all body shop equipment properly and safely.
- Apply primer, basecoat and clearcoat to various surfaces including aluminum, stainless steel, and plastic.
- Mix paint to customer specifications to achieve correct color and finish.
- Utilize cup guns, pressure pots, e-stat guns, airless equipment.
- Mask and protect parts that are not to be painted or coated.
- Inspect painted units for quality of workmanship, noting any runs, sags, or unpainted areas.
- Ability to repair damaged surfaces through proper brushing, spraying and buffing techniques.
- Sand and buff painted surfaces to achieve correct gloss and orange peel ratings.
- Apply caulk to required areas to prepare for painting.
- Maintain tools and keep equipment in a proper state of repair.
- Meet production goals.
- Complies with all laws and regulations pertaining to paint, thinners, and other hazardous materials. Reports any deviations to management.
- Cooperates and assists other personnel in the prepping, painting, and repairing of components.
- Frequently inspect and trouble shoot equipment to proactively detect potential problems and recommend the necessary repair or maintenance.
- Maintains and wears all required safety and health personal protective equipment, including respirator, in the manner recommended by the equipment manufacturer.
- Perform all work in accordance with quality standards and established safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean and safe workplace and always perform work safely.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 5 years of automotive body shop or fleet painting experience.
- Experience or certification with PPG coating systems preferred.
- Ability to use analytical thinking and reasoning to problem-solve.
- Ability to effectively organize assigned work so that job tasks are performed efficiently, accurately, according to schedule.
- Basic computer navigation and utilization skills and knowledge.
- High degree of attention to detail, self-motivation, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Working Conditions: this position is subject to an inside working environment and will be exposed to:
- noise - loud, sharp, extended, impulse; up to, and occasionally more than, 85dBA (which may use of hearing protection,)
- vibration - directed to hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders from the use of electric and pneumatic (impact) hand tools of varying sizes.
- hazards – electric current; oils and lubricants; moving mechanical parts; chemical cleaners and solvents; sharp edges on stainless steel and other components and metal shavings airborne dust, occasional intense light from welding in work area or adjacent work areas; working on elevated platforms, ladders, and scaffolds; paints, solvents, and thinners.

- repetitive grasping, pinching with fingers; repetitive pulling, pushing, twisting of wrists, elbows, and shoulders.

- stepping up to work surfaces up to 26 inches in height.
