LOCATION: FAR WEST SUBURBS

HOURS: DAYS REGISTRY WITH WKD AND HOLIDAY ROTATION

Major Responsibilities:

  • Evaluation and implementation of Occupational Therapy treatment programs for patients with multiple diagnoses, safely and effectively.
    • 1)Perform patient evaluations and re-evaluations and establish and implement appropriate treatment programs individually or in conjunction with the COTA or student
    • 2)Periodic re-evaluation utilizing judgment for progression/modification
    • 3)Implements, monitors, progresses, and modifies treatment plan as indicated to attain goals.
    • 4)Instruct patients in home exercise program, use of ADL equipment and provide Patient/family education as indicated.
    • 5)Schedules patients according to priority/needs.
    • 6)Exhibits an average weekly productivity of at least 65% direct patient care for inpatient and 80% for outpatient.
  • Documentation of patient evaluation, progress and discharge
    • 1)Prepare, maintain and transmit accurate and timely patient treatment records including evaluation, progress and discharge notes.
    • 2)Observe and record patient's progress throughout the treatment period to assure continuity of care and provide accurate records.
    • 3)Complete daily charge sheets, productivity, attendance records, charges and services rendered.
  • Coordination of activities with other Physical Medicine personnel.
    • 1)Shares treatment/office space.
    • 2)Supervises COTAs/technicians/aides while performing Occupational therapy treatments as appropriate
    • 3)Maintains O.T. equipment in proper working condition and reports any malfunction to the Inpatient/Outpatient Supervisor
    • 4)Maximizes use of support personnel by delegating as appropriate
    • 5)Follows hospital infection control and safety protocols
    • 6)Assists in, taking and delivering accurate messages and other clerical tasks
    • 7)Assists with defined responsibilities for the OT department in the absence of the Inpatient/Outpatient supervisor
  • Participation in educational / professional development activities
    • 1)Keeps informed of changes occurring within Physical Medicine Department and Advocate Healthcare.
    • 2)Presents 1-2 inservices per year.
    • 3)Attends and participates in departmental meetings on regularly scheduled work days.
    • 4)Attends a minimum of two continuing education courses. May be Advocate sponsored or outside sponsored courses..
    • 5)Keeps abreast of current practices via literature, networking, internal/external resources, etc.
    • 6)Participates in PI programs and on PI teams as needed.
    • 7)Completes mandatory competencies in a timely manner.
    • 8)Assists in planning/presenting at health fairs, career days and other community programs as needed.
    • 9)Provides inservice training to hospital personnel regarding therapy techniques and equipment as needed.
  • Promotion of Occupational Therapy
    • 1)Assists in planning/presenting specialty seminars.
    • 2)Participates in health fairs, career days and other community programs as needed.
    • 3)Assists with marketing programs, both planning and implementation
    • 4)Supervise and mentor student volunteers.
  • Provision of clinical education programs
    • 1)Supervise and evaluate students on learning progress and cooperate with the school in an effort to improve and update the clinical experience for students
    • 2)Provides students with effective feedback to guide performance.
    • 3)Complete formal written evaluations of student progress utilizing proper forms.
    • 4)Meets with Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education (ACCE) as needed to assess student progress.
    • 5)Acts as mentor for Occupational Therapy I for 6 months or longer as necessary. This includes initial goal setting and monthly monitoring of goals as needed.
  • Implementation of Department Goals.
    • 1)Assists PT/OT supervisor and leadership with new program development
    • 2)Actively participates in annual departmental goal setting.
    • 3)Actively assists with achieving "Always" and "Very Good" responses on survey tools for inpatient and outpatient areas respectively.
  • Consultation with other personnel
    • 2) Attends case conferences or unit rounds as indicated with physicians, nurses, other related personnel and family to discuss and evaluate patient's condition, progress and plans for further O.T.
    • 3)Consults with physicians or other personnel to clarify diagnoses, update prescriptions, etc.
    • 1)Communicates effectively with O.T. intra and interdisciplinary team members, and other hospital personnel to ensure familiarization with the department's purpose and functions; to promote cooperative and efficient working relationships and ensure consistent, quality O.T. patient treatment

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Occupational Therapist license issued by the state in which the team member practices (IL or WI)

Education/Experience Required:

  • - Masters degree in Occupational Therapy (or Bachelors degree for graduates prior to 2007) from an accredited school. -2-3 yrs. clinical experience including 2 yrs. outpatient or 2 yrs. inpatient. -Meets the annual stroke education requirement of 8 hours/year, (for therapists working with adult stroke population) through in-services, journal club, grand rounds, self-study and other continuing education opportunities.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • - Microsoft Word - Familiarity with electronic medical record
  • - NBCOT Registration -Eligible for license in Illinois to practice O.T. - CPR certified.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • This position involves bending, lifting consistently at least 50 pounds, assisting patients, etc. which often requires physical strength, endurance and use of proper body mechanics. Set-up of certain equipment requires strength to tighten knobs, etc. Physical stamina during emergency situations may be required and often cannot be delegated (i.e. assisting patients down stairs during re-education, performing CPR, etc. Evening hours may be required. Weekend work is required in some areas.
  • This requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 08/01/2014. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Addendum: -8 hours of stroke education/year

COMPENSATION: $48.00 per hour
