Duties Description Independently performs the duties below; and provides consultation upon referral for individuals' communication and swallowing needs, including appropriate follow-up regarding guidelines, staff training, and direct therapy.
• Assesses individuals who have swallowing disorders; conducts oral-motor assessments; and coordinates and carries out swallowing evaluations.
• Teaches individuals how to develop and strengthen muscles used to swallow and/or speak, including how to make sounds and improve their voices.
• Recommends diet consistencies and dining techniques.
• Trains staff in choking prevention, dysphagia, aspiration, and communication.
• Serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team; and assists in the development of individuals' treatment plans.
• Monitors and records changes in individuals' conditions and maintains a variety of records, in accordance with agency guidelines and requirements.POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Speech Language Pathologist 2 (SLP) will serve an integral function, providing both speech and swallowing therapy at Bernard Fineson DDSO (BFDDSO); the incumbent's time will be shared among the Article 16 Clinic, Independent Practitioner Services for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities (IPSIDD), the Extended Treatment Unit (ETU), and the Comprehensive Adult Treatment Home (CATH). The SLP will evaluate individuals for services, develop and review treatment plans and provide ongoing services to individuals served by these programs. It is preferred that the incumbent will have familiarity and knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid regulations regarding outpatient rehabilitation therapy services and will be current with their Medicare/Medicaid and IPSIDD enrollment. The SLP will also coordinate and provide discipline specific trainings, participate in local and statewide committees, and offer recommendations on adaptive equipment needs for the individuals served. This position will require local travel within the Borough of Queens, as well as within NYS to participate in statewide initiatives.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The incumbent will function as a Speech Language Pathologist within the Region 6 Article 16 Clinic and Bernard Fineson IPSIDD programs, and will serve as an important member of the interdisciplinary team of the ICF programs operated by Bernard Fineson DDSO with duties to include:
• Will provide and review evaluations, screenings, assessments and on-going therapy services as needed in the Article 16 Clinic and IPSIDD programs.
• In compliance with 483 regulations, will provide immediate evaluations to every individual admitted to the ICF programs operated by Bernard Fineson DDSO, and based upon the outcome of these evaluations may also provide ongoing therapeutic speech and swallowing therapy services as an integral member of the ICF interdisciplinary team.
• Will make recommendations for necessary adaptive equipment, and ongoing therapeutic services for individuals with communication and swallowing disorders; this will include local travel within the borough of Queens to provide necessary services.
• Will develop and implement treatment plans, as well as select, monitor and administer therapeutic interventions and modalities based upon the individual's needs.
• Will provide discipline specific training to individuals, collateral supports, and other team members to ensure all are able to best support the communication and swallowing needs of the individuals served by BFDDSO's programs.
•Serve as the ST representative at interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, when requested
• May assist in the development and implementation of ST policies and procedures
• Participation in Local and Statewide committees and communities of practice. This may include travel within NYS to other OPWDD locations for statewide initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications 70.1:If you are currently a New York State employee serving in a permanent competitive qualifying title and eligible for a transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law, you may be appointed to this title as a permanent competitive employee.OR Open Competitive: possession of a license and current registration as a Speech Language Pathologist in New York State or certification in Speech Language Pathology by ASHA.

Additional Comments This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). HELPS Program titles may be filled via a non-competitive appointment. This means that you do not need to take an exam to qualify, but you do need to meet the minimum qualifications of the title.At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their permanent non-competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status. You will not have to take an exam to gain permanent competitive status.
• Please note that starting salary for this title reflects the geographic differential and downstate adjustment. Posted Hiring Salary includes the sum of the statutory hiring rate for Grade 20 ($72,032), Geographic Differential ($13,000) and Downstate Adjustment ($3,400). Geographic Differential and Downstate Adjustment is added to the job rate ($91,381).
