LOCATION: Sacramento, Ca - Short-Term Transitional Emergency Program (STEP)

JOB SUMMARY: The On-Call Housing Advocate is responsible for supporting the implementation of daily programming within the housing continuum. The On-Call Housing Advocate would support the implementation of structured group programming, crisis intervention, and employment/academic readiness services. Low-barrier services are designed to reach disconnected LGBTQ+ transitional-aged youth (18-24 years old) as the program is rooted in community building, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction models. All program participants have experienced physical and/or sexual abuse, homelessness, engagement with criminal justice and/or foster care systems, substance use/abuse, and/or mental health challenges.

The On-Call Housing Advocate reports to the Director of Housing Services and works in partnership with other programming staff and community members of diverse backgrounds. This is a part-time, non-exempt, grant-funded position. On-Call Housing Advocates will be expected to provide their availability upon hire. On-Call Housing Advocates will be expected to work open shifts, as requested by the Director of Housing Services, as it aligns with their stated availability.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure that community agreements and policies related to the housing program and provision of services are followed, with client safety at the forefront.
  • Support residents with crisis intervention or behavioral issues and navigate internal or external resources for support.
  • Motivate participants to implement the established plan and provide problem-solving assistance for participant inquiries.
  • Collect required program data; ensure program materials and supplies are adequate for program needs, and that the shelter is well maintained.
  • Support group activities for residents including one or more of the following: activities, workshops, special events, and skill-building sessions.
  • Actively participate as a member of the program team, including the provision of backup for other program staff as needed.
  • Control access to resident contraband.
  • Commitment to serving the most vulnerable (transgender/gender non-conforming people, people of color, people with disabilities, people who are marginally housed or experiencing homelessness, unemployed and underemployed people, low-income people, etc.)
  • Exhibits continuous accountability, transparency, compassion, and humility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Passion for the Center’s mission and work to create a region where LGBTQ people thrive and a commitment to follow all policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Experience working with LGBTQ+ and homeless youth populations and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to intersectional identities within the LGBTQ+ community; lived experience is a plus.
  • Understanding of Harm Reduction framework and the Trauma Informed Service Models and how they apply to client-centered approach.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, varying degrees of fluency in English, immigration status, and physical abilities in an empathetic and empowering way.
  • Working knowledge and relationships with community resources as they relate to crime victim services, homelessness, and youth.
  • Ability to anticipate and address crises, resolve conflict effectively, and maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality while working independently and in collaboration with a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work in a culturally diverse and fast-paced environment.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Must receive and pass the CPR/First Aid certification within the first three months of employment.
  • Bilingual fluency in English and one or more other languages is preferred.
  • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Slack and client services databases, and social media tools.
  • Access to reliable transportation or reliable automobile transportation with a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance is required. This position may on occasion, be required to drive rented vehicles.
  • The person in this position may be required to sit or stand for extended periods, maneuver tight storage space, move objects up to 25 pounds, ascend/descend stairs, operate computers, copiers, and other office equipment, open and close filing cabinets and boxes, observe visitors and communicate messages and tone via telephone
  • The results of the criminal history background check must be satisfactory. Offers of employment may be contingent on results.
  • Employees must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
  • The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is a drug-free workplace; employees may be subject to a drug test.
  • Complete 8 hours of training before filling in open shifts.
  • Provide a month’s worth of general availability.
  • Able to fill in shifts when requested as it aligns with stated availability. A minimum of 2 hours' notice prior to being requested to fill an open shift is provided; acknowledging allowance of three consecutive shift refusals before being terminated from employment.
  • As an organization, we fully support COVID-19 vaccinations and require new employees to have either proof of full vaccination, written notice of an upcoming vaccination appointment, or an approved medical or religious exemption. Documentation will be required prior to your first day of work.
