At Houston Methodist, the Lead Veterinary Technician position is responsible for assisting with leading all aspects of the health and welfare of laboratory animals. This position serves as the liaison and primary point of contact between leadership, including the Veterinary Technician Supervisor and staff for routine matter which includes leading and training of veterinary technician staff on daily monitoring and treatment for all species, maintaining accurate health records, communication, and follow-up with research staff, and providing veterinary technical and anesthesia support to investigators and their teams. The Lead Veterinary Technician position has a strong understanding of when to escalate issues to leadership and how to effectively communicate minor performance and conduct issues to veterinary technician staff. Duties for this position include the following tasks: organizing work assignments and training schedules, delegation of routine tasks and services, assisting in the implementation of quality improvement activities; leading various trainings for the veterinary technician staff and cross trainings for animal care staff, and mentoring CMP staff. The Lead Veterinary Technician position may lead or regularly participate in special projects; collect, analyze, and report on data or metrics and hold other responsibilities of a similar nature and level. PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Leads in the education, quality assurance and scheduling of training on animal handling skills and experimental procedures to entry level team members. Communicates solutions for potential problems to leadership regarding existing facility policies and procedures. Leads and initiates problem resolution within the work unit. Facilitates teamwork by coordinating department needs and responding positively to requests for assistance. Role models skills through peer-to-peer accountability that contributes towards improving department employee engagement, efficiencies, and customer satisfaction SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides pre, peri and post-operative care including, but not limited to: shaving and skin preparation, animal transport, administration of anesthesia and analgesia, intubation, bandaging, or any other treatment as directed by the veterinarian and/or leadership. Oversees and/or trains veterinary technician staff in procedure preparation, anesthesia monitoring and service requests in multiple species using appropriate instruments and aseptic technique with oversight from the veterinarian. Generates reports specific to the veterinary technician team for analysis by leadership including, but not limited to, number of technical services provided, number of drug requests filled, number of bill-able hours, and current training completions. QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Reviews and ensures that animal records are maintained in conformance with institutional policies and federal regulations including the Animal Welfare Act, Good Laboratory Practices and the standards required by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care for accreditation and provides feedback to the veterinary technician team. Coordinates and leads trainings for accurate maintenance of both written and electronic animal treatment records and reviews records on a regular basis to ensure veterinary technician staff are following the required documentation procedures. Identifies issues with veterinary technical equipment such as gas anesthesia machines, and digital radiography and communicates issues to the facility manager and/or leadership to ensure equipment is in proper working order prior to operating procedures. FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Oversees and participates in inventory management for veterinary technician staff including examining levels of supplies to optimize inventory control procedures and prevent shortages or excessive surplus. Oversees and participates in regular inventory checks and supply order documentation to ensure all drugs and supplies are in date and available when needed, including controlled substances. Leads trainings and participates in maintenance of accurate entry of billing charges and reviews records on a regular basis to ensure veterinary technician staff are following the required documentation procedures. GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Demonstrates commitment to learn, review, suggest improvements, refine and formalize a variety of veterinary technician, animal care, and facility support procedures (e.g., Standard Operating Procedures). Embraces opportunities to acquire additional knowledge regarding guidelines and regulations that affect CMP's animal research facility and engages CMP staff to participate in a growth mindset through one-on-one mentoring.
